When Harmony went over to the park the next week, Winter wasn't there for some reason. Harmony called out "Subzero!" and "Winter!" a few times, but there was no response.
"Subzero, where did you go?"
Harmony looked around, and saw footprints in the snow on the field. There was an x in the snow, and Harmony dug it up. There was a note. She unfolded it, and the note read:
Don't follow me. Just don't.
-Subzero/So-called Winter.
I should probably follow her to check if she's okay. Harmony thought. But what if she's right? What if I shouldn't follow her?I
Harmony saw a weird silver shape in the snow. Running over to it, she thought it might be important since it was near the note Subzero buried. She picked it up. It was a tape recorder.
Harmony played the tape.
"I wanted to escape my everyday life. I wanted something new, without problems. I couldn't go to the forest, though. That would be too far from this place, where I wanted to stay, because something felt like home. It was either be close by old friends, or live my dream. I guess things lead me to stay here."
Harmony switched it to the second-to-last thing recorded.
"I am still scared of what will happen next. But Subzero gave me hope. She said I had to help her with combining fantasy and reality. The first time I saw her, she cured my frostbite, but I still look like I have that. Anyway, she also said that we can have a form where she could help me, and the cat would also have wings. But the catch is that it would be forever. I didn't care, because I wanted to leave my old life. After the transformation, the old Subzero would be called Star instead, and I would be the new Subzero. I still accepted. I still don't know what will happen next, but hopefully it's good. I might never see anyone again, but hopefully, I will."
The last part of the tape started playing, after that.
"To Harmony, Tai, or anyone else: Please don't listen to this. If you already did, stop and forget what I just said. You don't need to know what I've been through. It's too emotional for you, and you won't understand."
The tape stopped there.
"She... She's not coming back..."
