The Lion And His Lioness -- A Hamilton Fanfiction
Chapter 1 - It Should Have Been Me

Esperanza
I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. Picking it up, I saw that it was my best friend, James, calling me. I smiled, picking it up. "Hey, dude!" I said, a small smile gracing my features.

"Dude! You won't believe what happened this morning!" He exclaimed. I laughed, getting up from my bed and putting my phone on speaker so that I could get changed.

"What happened, J?" I asked, picking out my outfit.

"Right, so this morning my mom came in and was like 'bitch you better get your lazy ass out of that bed' and I was like 'bitch why?' she was like 'because I'm the motherfucking president'. I have never been fucking prouder of my mother than this moment!" He laughed. I laughed, imagining his face when his mother said that. We are both very big fans of Hamilton if you can't tell.

"Dude, your mom is awesome!" I exclaimed, going downstairs with my phone off the speaker and putting my earphones in my ears.

"I know right?! Anyway, do we have history today?" He asked, changing the topic slightly.

Thinking, I nodded to myself. "Yeah, yeah we do," I replied, quickly walking to school. "What I would give to go to the 1700s!" I groaned, picking up the pace slightly.

"Why?"

"So I don't have to go to school and I can meet Alexander Hamilton, duh!" I replied as if it were obvious. He laughed causing me to smile. I saw him across the street and quickly hung up. "Wait there! I'll come over to you!" I called to him. He smiled and nodded.

I was almost halfway across when his face dropped drastically. I frowned and continued walking, my mind racing with what he might've seen. I was just getting halfway across when I heard it.

Tires against the road.

I attempted to get to the other side quickly but, alas, it seems the Gods are not on my side today. Curse you, Zeus. Just as I finished cursing Zeus and the other gods, I felt the car make an impact on my body.

CRASH

The front of the car dented slightly. The impact from the car forced me sideways a good distance, my body hitting the ground with a solid thud. I heard people running over and someone sobbing, I think it was James. I couldn't tell anymore.

I glanced off to the side slightly to see an ambulance on its way over to us. Paramedics started to treat my wounds before I slowly started to close my eyes. "We're losing her!" One of them called out. That's when I closed my eyes completely, ignoring the paramedics telling me to stay awake. I was so gosh darn tired. I just wanted to sleep.

I'll wake up soon, James, I promise. Was the last thing I thought before all I could see was darkness. Cold, invading, yet ever so welcoming, darkness.

James
"Please wake up soon, R, I can't be left alone!" I begged the still and lifeless body of my best friend, my first friend, my crush. "Please," I whispered, taking her cold, pale hand in my own warm, coloured hand and giving it a slight squeeze. When she did nothing in return, sobs travelled up my throat and came out in choked, irregular sobs. My breathing became uneven as I tried to hide my sobs. Why? It should have been me.
