The Lion And His Lioness -- A Hamilton Fanfiction
Chapter 34 - Washington's Last RoundWashington
I sighed as I looked at the medium sized portrait of my daughter. I should hang it up, tell the people to leave it here. What if future generations never found out about my only living daughter, my youngest child? Never found out what she had succeeded in? That she was the only female soldier to fight for her country's freedom? If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have had the idea to pick Alexander as my aide de camp, or to have Alexander as the Treasury Secretary and Jefferson as the Secretary of State. Esperanza had done so much for us, and we gave her so little for what she had done. How could I ever repay her for what she had done?Standing up, I picked the medium sized portrait of Esperanza up and gently hung it on the left wall of the office, the one closest to the door. Hopefully this will keep her memory alive, even if it's only when people see the painting of her. Will the future know of her? Or will they just disregard her as 'Another woman in history'? As 'Another woman in the shadow of men'? I glared at the floor and clenched my fists at the thought; women deserved more than what they were getting currently. Why couldn't society see that? Why?
Taking a deep breath as the door opened, I remembered what I needed to do. Alexander was coming today so that I could talk to him. Jefferson stood down so he could run for President, I'm not going to run again. If we want this country to become better than Britain and the Colonies, we need to focus. We have to! I will not allow my country, the country I fought so hard to free along with hundreds fo men, to become as corrupt as Britain has. Never in a million dreams will I allow for that to happen.
"Mr. President, you asked to see me?" Hamilton asked as he entered the room, glancing at the portrait I put up of Es. "Sir?"
"I know you're busy," I told him, not facing him as I looked out the window which overlooked part of the area where the White House was situated.
"What do you need, sir?" I still did not turn to face him. "Sir?"
I turned towards him, seeing the way he was dressed. Still in that ridiculous green suit. I shook my head, turning to glance at the portrait of my youngest daughter before looking back at Alexander. "I want to give you a word of warning, Alexander."
"Sir, I don't know what you heard. But whatever it is, Jefferson started it!" And there he goes again; blaming Thomas. When will he learn that he can't blame others for his actions? Lucky for him, Jefferson resigned this morning.
"Thomas Jefferson resigned this morning."
"You're kidding!"
"I need a favour,"
"Whatever you say, sir, Jefferson will pay for his behaviour!"
"Shh. Talk less." How does Es put up with this man?
"I'll use the press. I'll write under a pseudonym, you'll see what I can do to him-"
"I need you to draft an address."
"Yes! He resigned. You can finally speak your mind-" no.
"No, he's stepping down so he can run for President."
"Ha. Good luck defeating you, sir."
"I'm stepping down, Alex. I'm not running for President."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"One last time. Relax, have a drink with me one last time. Let's take a break tonight and the nwe'll teach them how to say goodbye, you and I."
"No, sir, why?"
