The Lion And His Lioness -- A Hamilton Fanfiction
Chapter 35 - The Langdon Pamphlet
Alexander
"Mr. Vice President, Mr. Madison, Senator Burr. What is this?" I asked as we all sat down.
"We have the check stubs from separate accounts," Jefferson started. What was he getting at?
"Almost a thousand dollars, paid in different amounts," Madison continued. Okay...? Where the heck were these three taking this discussion? I thought they wanted to talk about something important, not about this! What even is this discussion?
"To a Mr. Chris Langdon way back in seventeen ninety-one." Burr finished. Shit. How the heck did they find out?
"Is that what you have? Are you done?" I asked, trying to play it off. Shit, shit, shit, shit shit!
"You are uniquely situated by virtue of your position."
"Though virture is not a word I'd apply to this situation." That bastard. He was probably the one who dug this up, wasn't he? If he was, then fuck him, he's a fucking asshole!
"To seek financial gain, to stray from your sacred mission." What mission?
"And the evidence suggests you've engaged in speculation." Shit.
"An immigrant embezzling our government funds."
"I can almost see the headline, your career is done."
"I hope you saved some money for your daughter and sons."
"Ya best g'wan run back where ya come from." Okay, rude. I do not speak like that, and just because I'm from the Carribean? That's low, even for Jefferson's standards and he's a child rapist!
"Ha," I laughed, "you don't even know what you're asking me to confess." Confess. "You have nothing, I don't have to tell you anything at all. Unless..." Unless. "If I can prove that I never broke the law, do you promise not to tell another soul what you saw?"
"No one else was in the room where it happened..." Burr muttered.
"Is that a yes?" I was getting quite agitated by these three now as you can probably tell. It was enraging how they were trying to claim that I was ruining our nation and using my position the best way I could. That is not true, at all.
"Um, yes," the three said. I nodded, giving the letter Chris Langdon sent me back in 1791 to Burr.
""Dear Sir, I hope this letter finds you in good health and in a prosperous enough position to put wealth in the pockets of people like me, down on their luck. You see, that was my wife who you decided to-"" Burr read.
"Whaaat?!"
I sighed heavily, leaning against the desk behind me with my hands clutching the edge. "She courted me, escorted me to bed and when she had me in a corner, that's when Langdon extorted me for a sordid fee. I paid him quarterly, I may have mortally wounded my prospects, but my papers are orderly. As you can see I kept a record of every check in my checkered history," I told them as I showed them the lsit of my checks that I had received, "check it again against your list and see consistency. I never spent a cent that wasn't mine. You sent the dogs after my scent, that's fine. Yes, I have reasons for shame, but I have not committed treason and sullied my good name. As you can see I have done nothing to provoke legal action, are my answers to your satisfaction?"
"My God," Jefferson whispered in shock and... horror? In his eyes was a look of... sympathy? for someone I couldn't tell. I should have known it was for Rena.
