THE EXOTIC DANCER CHAPTER 052

"From Now On He Is HAROLD"

"Where were you this morning? I called you a couple of times... you said you would contact me as soon as your date was over last night. We were worried Shailene."

"Shailene."

My fingers dance around the neckline of my shirt. Tracing along the little white buttons holding it together with care and careful intent. For a moment my thumb meets my chest for just a moment and I can't help but think of him. How it felt to be tou-

"Shailene!"

I lift my head quickly when I hear Max raise his voice to me. He surprised me, but at that moment I notice he had been speaking to me. Somehow I managed to hear everything he said but not comprehend any of it.

"Ummm, I'm sorry I'm just a little dazed. Didn't get much sleep last night you know? I'm sorry for not calling, that was irresponsible of me. It won't happen again okay?" I lift my hand to let it drag down the side of his face softly.

"Thank you for watching her for me. You are a good friend even if you want to belive it anymore." He seems surprised by my words but accepts them either way, nodding his head as he takes my hand.

"Not as good as you thought." He insists.

"No of course not, but don't compare yourself to me Max it's not good to set yourself up for that kind of failure." I joke giving his chest a light push.

Max chuckles, moving back slightly under the force of me shoving him. "Why are you being so nice? It's weird. I yelled at you and you didn't yell back. You didn't get annoyed or have some smart ass response. You complimented me. Now I won't go and doubt you are a good person but you have to admit you are acting weird. What's up?"

I push off the counter and walk to the living room, picking up random articles of clothing on my way so I can do a load of laundry for these heathens. Max's place is nice... I worry that Lucy may be a bit distant to the thought of going home after living here.

"So you're just going to ignore me?" Max asks, following me out.

"Its nothing, I'm just... Today hasn't been as horrible as I thought it was going to be this morning so I'm happy. Why does there have to be something more going on? I'm just happy."

I can see a slight smirk forming at the corners of my best friend's mouth and worry sets into my heart. Does he know? How could he possibly know?
