THE EXOTIC DANCER CHAPTER 015✔ "Cards"
"Bad day?" Joe asks as i walk through the door. I don't know how he could tell so quickly but i reluctantly nod my head. "I guess you could say that."
He pats the window seat across from his wheelchair that he sits in every now and again when his legs are feeling particularly bad. "Well is it or isn't it?" he asks as i sit down across from me. Joe taking my hands in his.
"It is." I admit softly. "I hate days like this."
Joe nods as if he understands what i'm talking about. " But everyone has a bad day every now and again right?" he asks.
I smile ever so slightly and agree with him but when my eyes meet his something tells me he isn't having the best day either. "How was your day?" I ask, giving my cheeks a wipe with my free hand making sure there are no lingering tears left on them.
I hope this moment of weakness doesnt leave me with a puffy face tomorrow morning.
"Terrific." he replies, the tone of his voice matching the exhaustion in his eyes. I know he is not telling me the truth, not wanting to burden me with his pain and problems. I suppose it's not just me who holds back when it comes to things like this.
It's an abnormal normality.
If he doesn't want to tell me what's wrong then he doesn't have to, i'm not going to try and pry the truth out of him. We are all entitled to our secrets.
We sit in silence for about five minutes before he sits up on his wheelchair and breaks it, beginning to speak. "My nurse says i might have to move into a nursing home. I had to set the girl straight and tell her i'm not that old yet." he jokes.
It was something i had expected to happen sometime, but i thought Joe was doing better. I suppose better for a man of his age may still be classified as pretty bad.
"Oh of course, how could she make such a mistake? What are you thirty five?" I ask with a smile.
He joins in with a hardy chuckle. "You're a doll, but we both know i'm not getting along very well anymore. But God forbid i let them take me to one of those god forsaken homes. If i'm going to die i'm going to do it right here." He says adamantly.
He says it in a way that makes me sure i would hate to be the one that has to try and take him from his home.
"When i told her that she told me maybe i could meet some nice ladies there." He continues with a roll of his eyes.
