Less than an hour later, Hilgen came back to the room. "Haki's coming tonight. She's the closest one around who can do the job."

"All right, we'll meet the girl tomorrow morning. We have time to brief Haki on what to do. We need to convince them, and we only have one shot," Clair said.

"You're getting too attached to these humans, aren't you?" Hilgen asked.

"That's not your concern," she replied.

He snorted.

Haki arrived past midnight, quietly entering the room where the chiefs awaited. Kneeling respectfully before them, she expressed her eagerness to assist.

"It's an honor to serve the chiefs. Please instruct me on my task," she said humbly.

"Rise and join us at the table," Hilgen directed.

Taking her place, Haki awaited their next instructions.

"At sunrise, we will meet a girl named Editha. She is unable to communicate verbally, but we require specific information from her. We trust in your abilities to extract that memory," Clair explained.

"Understood," Haki acknowledged.

"Our approach must be discreet, causing no harm," Clair emphasized.

Haki nodded in agreement.

The following morning, they headed to the address provided by Dr. Botha. It was a compact, clay-built house. As a woman emerged from the door, she seemed startled by their presence. She took a step back, then began to retreat indoors.

"Wait!" Clair called out.

The woman halted in her tracks.

From the crack in the door emerged a petite girl, appearing to be between five and seven years old, who timidly clung to the woman's long skirt. Clair greeted her with a warm smile, which was reciprocated.

"We're here to offer your daughter free medical assistance. We have a wonderful doctor here who can examine her," Clair offered kindly in their native language, her tone cheerful.

Stepping forward, Filbur introduced himself, his demeanor friendly and professional. "Good day, madam. I'm Dr. Filbur, a pediatrician," he stated in Swahili with a pleasant smile. "This is my assistant, Haki," he introduced, gesturing towards Haki, who stood by his side. With a gentle motion, Haki retrieved a stethoscope from her small pouch and handed it to Filbur. He then knelt down, extending an invitation for the child to participate in the examination.

The woman appeared hesitant, clutching the child tightly in her hand.

Filbur glanced at Clair, silently pleading for assistance.

Stepping closer to the woman and child, Clair spoke reassuringly. "You don't need to be afraid. We provide this service in many other communities. It's essential for keeping your child healthy," she explained in their native language. Then, she turned her attention to the child, using sign language to convey that they were friendly and there was nothing to be afraid of.

Editha's smile widened in response.

The woman finally nodded, granting permission for Editha to be examined. Filbur conducted a thorough yet gentle physical check-up, which lasted about fifteen minutes. Once he finished, he rose from his wooden chair and approached the woman, whom they had learned was Editha's grandmother. As he discussed Editha's condition with her, Clair approached Editha.

"Hi, Editha," Clair greeted warmly, waving to her.

The small girl returned Clair's greeting with a shy smile.
