Midnight

Edmund frowned slightly as he woke, hearing voices coming from downstairs. Surely it couldn't be morning just yet.
He rolled over in bed and glanced at the clock on the shelf, frowning even more when it said 12pm.
Who would be awake at midnight?
Sighing slightly he turned back over, intending to go back to sleep, that is until he realised Peter's bed was empty.
What an earth was he doing up at midnight?
Hesitating slightly Edmund pulled back the covers and climbed out of bed, slowly walking over to the door and slipping out onto the landing.
Tip-toeing to the stairs he walked quietly to the bottom and sat down, peering into the living room, to see Peter and his Mum both sat on the sofa, talking together. Peter was in his pyjamas so it was quite obvious that he had already been to bed, and if his hair was anything to go by, then he'd definitely been to sleep as well.
He listened carefully to what they were saying, holding his breath and hoping beyond hope that it wasn't anything to do with his dad.
"Listen Peter please." His Mum sighed. "A new school will be good for you all."
Edmund frowned at this. A new school? Whatever for?
"But I just don't see why?" Peter groaned. "Our school is perfectly fine."
"Peter please." Their Mum muttered. "Don't argue with me on this, I've made up my mind."
Peter sighed. "Does Lucy have to change schools?" He asked.
His Mum sighed. "You know She doesn't. You all go to boarding school, you know she's not old enough to yet."
"Edmund will be though." Peter said.
Edmund sighed quietly, he'd been waiting for that. If he was honest he didn't know why his mother hadn't put him into boarding school after the summer holidays, he would of been old enough - just. But he thought with everything that was going on, the war, dad getting a letter saying that he had to go fight - she probably decided to lay it off for another term.
"Edmund is going." His Mum said quietly, Edmund only just hearing her.
"When?" Peter asked.
"After the Christmas holidays." His Mum told him. "I know it's obviously a bit late, seeming as everyone usually starts after summer, but this year alot of people aren't starting til after Christmas, which makes perfect sense.
Peter sighed and nodded slowly. "When shall I tell the others?" He asked.
"Tell them in the morning Peter." His Mum said.
"I doubt They'll be very pleased." Peter muttered. "Especially Edmund."
"Peter?" His mum asked.
"Hmm?"
"Is Edmund alright? I mean, how's he coping?"
Peter sighed. "He could be doing better I suppose." He said slowly. "He misses dad, but the again we all do." He paused for a while. "He's only been gone a week." He muttered.
"We'll all be fine Peter." His Mum said confidently. "We just have to wait until he gets back, which won't be long, dont worry."
Peter gave her a small smile. "Yeah." He breathed.
There was a while of silence before his Mum spoke again. "Right, back to bed."
Edmund only just saw Peter nod his head before he dashed quietly back up the stairs and into his room, practically leaping into bed and throwing the covers over him, pulling them up to his chin.
He couldn't believe that their Mum was sending them to a different school. He couldn't believe he was going to boarding school.
In all honesty there was a small part of him that was glad, seeming as everytime Peter went off to school he'd miss him so much, not knowing what to do with himself for months at a time.
He closed his eyes when he heard the bedroom door open and someone walk in.
He heard a sigh from his brother as he walked across the room, stopping at the end of Edmund's bed, causing Edmund to frown slightly, but not enough so that Peter would be able to see.
But he needn't of bothered.
"I know what you look like when you're asleep Ed, and that's not it."
Sighing in defeat Edmund opened his eyes and glanced over at Peter, who had know come around to sit on the edge of his bed.
"It take it from the look on your face you heard me and Mum?" Peter asked.
Edmund only nodded, slowly sitting up.
"I don't know why she's sending us to a different school." Peter said. "But please don't argue with her."
"Wouldn't I be starting a new school anyway?" Edmund asked. "Seeming as I'm old enough now to go to boarding school?"
Peter nodded slowly. "I suppose." He mumbled.
"Atleast now you won't be leaving me by myself for months on end." Edmund smirked.
Peter raised an eyebrow. "Months on end, is a little overreacting don't you think?" He said. "And you've never been by yourself, you've had Lucy."
Edmund glared at Peter. "But she doesn't like football or climbing trees and stuff. Not like you do."
Peter smiled. "I heard you've been roped into playing tea parties more than once." He teased.
Edmund groaned. "Who told you that?!" He exclaimed.
Peter shrugged but didn't say anything.
"It's just-" Edmund paused. "She gives me this look, I can't refuse when she asks me to play with her."
Peter chuckled. "Ah, the old puppy dog eyes." He said. "Yes, we've all fallen captive to them many times."
Edmund managed a small laugh at this, for 'puppy dog eyes' was in fact the best way to put it.
"Anyway." Peter said. "Get to sleep, big day tomorrow, Christmas eve."
Edmund grinned like the ten year old he was. "Can't wait." He said as he lay back down.
Peter chuckled slightly and pulled the covers over him. "Night." He whispered as he headed for his own bed.
"Night." Edmund replied sleepily, pulling the blanket up to his chin before slowly falling back to sleep.
