Edmund sighed slightly as he climbed out the bomb shelter the next morning, gripping the picture frame as he yawned loudly, rubbing at his eyes.
Just like Peter, Edmund hadn't been able to sleep last night, even when the bombs had stopped falling and the planes passed over, and he was exhausted.
He glanced back at Peter when he stepped outside, also yawning but probably looking alot better than Edmund.
Unlike Edmund Peter could survive on no sleep, but Edmund was never in a good mood if he didn't get enough sleep.
The five walked silently back into the house, Susan and Lucy - Lucy still half asleep - heading up to their room, and their Mum heading into the living room, Peter following quickly after her.
Edmund yawned again and followed them, sighing a little when he saw the glass scattered all over the floor.
"I guess we'll have to clean this up." His Mum sighed. "Atleast it's the only damage."
Edmund watched Peter nod before leaving the room, obviously going to get a dust pan and brush.
Edmund just stood in the doorway, watching his Mum as she bent down to pick up some of the bigger pieces.
He turned around when he heard an annoyed cry from Peter, and walking into the hallway he saw him stood by the cupboard under the stairs, pushing away a broom.
Edmund stared at him as he rubbed his head, before reaching back into the cupboard and finally bringing out a dust pan and brush.
"We really need to clean out that cupboard." Peter muttered when he spotted Edmund stood watching him. "I've just been wacked across the head with that broom."
Edmund bit back a smirk and instead just nodded his head a little.
"You really shouldn't have that picture frame Ed." Peter said as he passed him and entered the living room, Edmund turning and returning to standing in the doorway. "The glass is sharp."
"Really?" Edmund muttered sarcastically. "Didn't know that."
Peter rolled his eyes but said no more as he set about helping clean up.
"Your brother's right Edmund." His Mum said suddenly. "We'll get another frame, but for now please put it down, I don't want you getting cut as well."
Edmund sighed in annoyance but threw the picture onto the sofa, before heading up the stairs to his room.
He'd probably only been up there for around half an hour before he heard his Mum calling him, Susan and Lucy.
Standing from where he'd been sat on his bed he left the room and headed downstairs, finding Peter and his Mum sat at the kitchen table.
"Yeah?" He asked, hearing Susan and Lucy walk in behind them.
"Sit down." Their Mum said gently. "I wanted to talk to you all."
Edmund frowned slightly but sat down anyway, Susan and Lucy doing the same.
"Now." Their mum started. "I know this is gonna be hard, but I know you're all gonna be brave about it alright?"
"What's wrong?" Edmund asked quickly. "It's not-"
"It's nothing to do with your Dad." His Mum reassured him.
Edmund breathed a sigh of relief and relaxed slightly, leaning back in his chair.
"I've decided-" Helen paused for a moment and took a deep breath. "I've decided to send you all to the country."
Edmund's mouth dropped open as he sat up straight again, utterly shocked.
"What?" Lucy whispered, sounding extremely scared.
"You're all gonne be evacuated to the country." Their Mum sighed. "Where you'll be safe from all these bombings. You'll be staying with an old professor."
Edmund stared at her. "Why cant we stay here?!" He exclaimed.
"It's not safe here Edmund." His mum replied.
"I - I don't want to go." Edmund said quickly.
"Mum's right." Peter murmered. "It's way too dangerous."
"But - But what about you?" Susan asked, staring at her Mum.
"I will be fine." She said. "Don't worry about me."
"When do we leave?" Peter asked hesitantly.
"Tomorrow morning." His mum breathed.
Edmund's mouth dropped open again. "Tomorrow morning!" He exclaimed, taking a deep breath.
"I-" They all glanced over when Lucy finally spoke. "I don't want to go." She whispered, shaking her head.
Peter sighed and leaned over, picking her up and placing her in his lap, hugging her close. "Lu it's too dangerous to stay here." He murmered in her ear. "We'll be safe in the country. And hey, who knows what adventurous we might have?"
Lucy managed a faint smile at this, but she still had tears in her eyes.
"How long will we be gone for?" Susan asked, and they could all tell that she was trying to be brave about all this.
"I really don't know." Her mum replied, sighing slightly. "It could he a few weeks, maybe even a few months."
"Months!" Edmund choked.
Peter rolled his eyes. "Yes Edmund." He snapped. "Months."
Edmund scowled at him. "I won't go." He said firmly, crossing his arms. "I don't want to and I won't."
"Yes you will." Peter argued. "Why don't you just grow up?"
Edmund glared at him and watched as he went back to comforting Lucy.
Oh so you comfort Lucy and then tell me to grow up?!
He wanted to say this out loud, he really did, but he convinced himself not to.
He convinced himself that he didn't need any comfort, especially not from Peter.
But he was wrong, he was so wrong.
He really did need comfort, especially now, but I didn't look like Peter would be giving it to him anytime soon.
"I suggest you all go and pack." Their Mum choked. "And only one suitcase each mind."
Edmund sat there for a second before pushing his chair back harshly and standing, leaving the kitchen.
He ran all the way up to his room, and slammed the door as loudly as he could behind him.☆♡☆♡☆♡☆♡☆♡☆♡☆♡☆♡
