Edmund took as deep a breath as he could as he glanced up, eyes half open and tears rolling steadily down his cheeks.
He was slightly relieved that Ginnabrik had left him for a while, seeming as, for the last 4 hours he hadn't left him alone for a second, enjoying ripping every single scream from his throat and every single tear from his eyes.
He was slightly worried though about the fact that he could see Ginnabrik talking to the witch.
He was worried about what they were talking about more than anything, but seeming as they both kept glancing over at him, it couldn't be anything good.
He watched them for maybe five minutes before Ginnabrik nodded again and walked back over to him, smirking so widely it caused Edmund to shudder.
"I told you." The dwarf sneered. "I told you the Queen would eventually figure out that you're no longer of any use."
Edmund's eyes widened at this, surely he couldn't actually mean-
"She's just got something to do a minute." Ginnabrik laughed. "But she's gonna be over here any second to end your life."
Edmund took a deep breath, swallowing hard as his eyes slipped shut.
He didn't even try and hold back his tears, or keep his breathing under control.
Why should he? He was about to die.
He knew it was strange, but the idea of dying didn't scare him quite as much as he thought it would of, but he put that down to him knowing that he deserved this.
After everything he'd done, he deserved to die, and this time he was gonna get what he deserved.
His eyes squeezed tighter shut when he felt a dagger pressed against the side of his neck, and heard Ginnabrik's deep breaths in his ear.
"You know you deserve this, don't you." He laughed. "You betrayed everyone, and because you did, they're all going to die."
Edmund swallowed hard. "No." He choked, but was still too scared to open his eyes.
"Oh yes." Ginnabrik replied, sounding amused. "They'll be dead by the end of the week. But as for you, you'll be dead within the next minute."
Edmund let out a harsh sob at this, the fact that he'd never see his siblings again hitting him like a ton of bricks.
He couldn't do this, he needed to see them.
He needed to see Lucy, to be able to apologise to her for being such a beast and for always, continuously teasing her. He needed to see her again to make up for it, if he lived, he could make it up to her, be kind to her. But if he died, there was no chance of that happening at all.
He needed to see Susan again, to tell her that he really did enjoy her hugs, and the way she reminded him so much of their mum. He needed to apologise for pushing her away, for snapping at her whenever she tried to help, he just needed to apologise. But at this rate, that wasn't ever going to happen.
Most of all though, he needed to apologise to Peter. Whilst Lucy had been the one he'd been the meanest to, Peter had been the one he'd pushed away the most. The one he shouted at, shut out, argued with, and he wanted nothing more than to apologise, to make things right between the two of them, to fix their relationship, but with a sinking heart he realised that it was pointless even hoping for it.
He was going to die, and whilst he knew he deserved it, he just wanted to live.
He wanted to live just so he could see his siblings again.
All of a sudden though, the ground seemed to shake beneath him, and he found Ginnabrik slowly removing the knife from his neck.
Opening his eyes Edmund took a deep breath at seeing what was in front of him.
It was half human and half horse by the looks of it, and it took Edmund a while, but he eventually realised that it was a centaur.
The centaur was currently pointing his sword towards Ginnabrik, glaring firmly at him which caused the dwarf to slowly step away from his prisoner.
Edmund couldn't help but panick slightly when a faun stepped up to him and knelt beside him, reaching forward and grabbing the ropes binding him to the tree.
"There is no need to worry." The faun said as he succeeded in loosening the ropes. "We were sent by Aslan. You're safe now."
Edmund relaxed considerably at the mention of Aslan, and the second the gag was removed he swallowed hard and opened his mouth. "My - My siblings?" He just about managed to choke, his throat raw from lack of water.
"They're safe and waiting for your return." The faun replied, carefully pulling Edmund to his feet.
Edmund was so relieved by this that it left him dizzy, so dizzy in fact that he stumbled forward, gasping when he felt arms wrap around his waist and hold him up.
He slowly glanced up, finding himself face to face with the centaur he'd seen.
He couldn't help but wince at the firm look he was given, that almost angry glare that the centaur sent his way.
But as he continued to stare up at him, the centaur's face slowly began to soften, until he actually looked sorry.
Edmund had no time to wonder about any of this before his stomach did a flip, and he found himself throwing up... well, throwing up whatever little was left in his stomach.
The second he was finished, he felt himself being lifted into strong arms and held gently against someone's chest, before he heard the words: "We need to get him out of here." Followed by: "He doesn't look well, does he?" And: "I think he might pass out."
But he didn't hear or see anything else, for the second they began to move, his eyes slipped shut and he slowly passed out.
