"Shika! Shika!"
Melanie's hair got into my mouth as she tried to wake me up from the benches in the chapel.
"Mmm mm?" I said, trying to get her hair out of my mouth. Like any normal kid my age, I wanted to spend as much time on Saturdays sleeping in.
But alas. Chores.
The sisters wanted me to do some shopping in town while my friends took care of the youngsters. Oh, how troublesome.
"Shika-a!" Melanie said again, this time forcing me to wake up completely. I stretched myself against the benches and took my things to my room, where I found Kate, Katy, Ash and Gemma.
Ash was a freckled, short headstrong brunette with adorable, dark brown eyes. Gemma was a blonde with the bluest ocean eyes I'd ever seen.
Unfortunately they were going to be coming with me into town, and it's not like I didn't want them to. It was just that they were a bit too...
"... She walked over to bridge and had said that she found a thrown away gun!"
"She told me she found an injured patrol officer."
... Yeah. They talked too much, they talked a lot. But it was the only company I'd get when going into town, so I didn't bother arguing with them.
We were on our way home and I gave Ash and Gemma the shopping things, asking them to explain to the sisters that I'd be back later. They didn't ask, in fact, they carried on like nothing happened, chatting away.
I made my way to the largest bridge in that part of Norrham. The sun was out already in it's golden state, shining gold onto the glistening waters below the bridge. It was a good place to read, so I went to the library that was just next to it to get a book.
"Borrowing another book I see? Plan to read on the bridge again?"
I gave a simple half smiled to the librarian as he spoke, and when I came to check my book out, he caught sight of my locket.
"So Mother Rachel managed to retrieve it after all huh?" He said in a dream like state, "Quite the mystery behind that one. Many dark secrets..."
Officially spooked by the way his pale blue eyes turned a glossy white as he spoke, I left for the bridge, clutching the locket in my hand.
Why did he react the way he did?
Every answer that popped up in my head was as unreasonable as the question itself.
I didn't realise how much time I spent at the bridge thinking, but it was already late, and I didn't want to get in trouble with a patrol officer after curfew.
It didn’t occur to me, the amount of patrol cars parked outside the orphanage, but I walked in like I owned the building. It was oddly quiet, and it hit me the tension in the air was a little, no, very excessive.
All the little girls of the orphanage had gone to bed early, and those about my age, stood in line in front of a bunch of scary patrol officers.
One of the sisters took my bag as I was led to join the line. When I looked at the front of the line, they seemed to be going into the Mother Rachel’s office. I realized;
They’re not patrol officers.
It was my turn, and I walked into the office. It was way darker than it should’ve been. And It looked different too. The desk was cleared out completely, a few papers pardoned.
Mother Rachel stood in a corner, a fake Patrol officer in another, keeping a close eye on the both of us. The officer that took me in, motioned for me to sit, so I sat.
Across the table, an important looking guy asked me questions.
“Name?”
“Shikarukia…”
“Age?”
“Fourteen.”
“Attempts for adoption?”
This questioned was thrown at Mother Rachel, who answered with a slight shake of the head. Very few people thought of adopting girls my age. Very few people thought of adopting at all. It was like taking in an orphan brought a bad omen.
A few more questions, of which I don’t care to remember, were asked, and I answered each respectively. After the unusual interrogation, we were sent straight to bed. I didn’t want to sleep, but I was tired, wasted from the days work. My friends asked me what I thought, but I was already drousy.
“I’ll…think…on it……in the morning…..” I mumbled as I fell asleep.
