~Third person~

It was almost evening and Katy was beginning to worry about Shika. She had seen her leave with lieutenant Jokul in the morning, looking all tensed up to be going on mission.

But Katy knew she was silently exited, it was just the way Shika was, and it was Katy's job to know everything about her cinnamon roll.

The day had gone by dauntingly without Shika being there, or Katy not being at the fort. She didn't tell Shika, but the girl was more open with the lieutenants and Katy at the fort than she had ever been back at the orphanage. She usually had her nose stuck in a book or spent most of her time 'playing ninja' with the younger ones to avoid talking too much about herself. She did hang out with Katy and the others, but it was mostly because they came to her to try and break out of her shell. Needless to say, what they thought they knew about her was she had decided to show them.

Shika didn't want them to know who she really was.

Or more rather, Shika didn't want them to know that she didn't know who she really was.

It was unspoken really, but everyone there was either left at the orphanage abandoned by their parents, or their family didn't want them when their parents went missing or dead. Shika was the only one there who was picked off the streets, something that was looked down upon in Norrham but happened anyway because it was Mother Rachel who did it.

Katy remembered the day very clearly...

She was eight and all the girls were in the chapel doing basic school. Mother Rachel had walked into the room from one of the doors at the front, holding someone's hand behind her. She introduced someone named Shikarukia and a small person stepped from behind her.

She was a small girl, maybe six or so. Scrawny looking with shoulder cropped golden brown hair and the most unique eyes Katy had ever seen.

They were blue, but not really blue. More like a diamond silver glossed over with a faded blue. Really, really pretty eyes.

The little girl locked eyes with Katy, staring only for a bit before Mother Rachel dismissed the girls. Katy was about to leave when Mother Rachel called her.

"Yes Mother?"

"You'll take care of Shika won't you?"

The little girl looked at Katy, her eyes glassy, probably from crying.

Katy nodded to Mother Rachel and took the little girls hand. It was small, cold and bruised.

Just where exactly did Mother Rachel find her?

"Achoo!"

She did look cold...

"Let's get you dressed more warmly. I'm Katy by the way, Katy Winterhold."

"Shika."

"Katy! Katy!"

Katy dug her head out of the past and looked to face a little red head who popped into the room.

"Yes?"

"They're back."

"..."

There was a lot of commotion in the centre of the barracks, a lot of the trainees and officers were there. It was a big crowd.

"Ash! Ash what's going on?" Katy gained the attention of her dark haired friend.

"The lieutenants are back. Seems their mission took a bit longer than they thought..."
