6.am
I was awake for quite some time already. Already dressed but still sitting in bed reading.
When I had woken up earlier this morning, there was a book on my bed next to my head. It was small, black and had a small, golden cross in front. When I had opened it, it said;
Belongs to: Rachel Denman.
Mother Rachel.
Refusing to acknowledge who put it there, I went straight into reading it from the beginning.
Now, all around me, Kate and Melanie, the same friends I avoided yesterday, stirred awake and got themselves ready. When they were done we sat in awkward silence, no one speaking and no one wanting to.
Goodness it was unbearable.
Then the speaker came on and announced school, so we got up and started to walk out. Until we caught ourselves a split second later and snapped our heads towards the speaker.
Say what now? School?
So what if we were shocked? We had every right to be, I believe. You don't think so? Let's put it this way:
You're an orphan who spent most of their days finding part-time jobs to help around with the younger kids at the orphanage. School barely counts as a necessity so you learn the basics. General history, math and English.
Now, stay with me...
What is practically your family gets taken and some murdered in front of your eyes. You wake up in a strange place, not knowing where or by who and barely a week goes by before they ask you to go to school. School I tell you. School.
Do you empathise with us now?
Nevertheless, we, as usual, followed the green lines to a lecture hall. How should I describe it's size and occupants?
It
Was
Huge.
And that's all there was to it.
There were so many girls our age a few of which I recognized from Norrham and others that were clearly from beyond the Walls.
I can scratch rescue shelter off my list for locations. I thought to myself. There were just that many.
We found ourselves seats near the back, because;
1)Everywhere else was taken
And
2)Being average high schoolers, none of us liked sitting in the front.
Once we were seated, the doors closed and a person appeared from literally nowhere. They wore a white lab coat and had sunglasses with white lenses on, I know, makes no sense.
Their hair, if you could call it that, swept the floor in a ponytail and was a blinding silver. Not ageing grey, but purified, fresh silver.
They pressed a few things on the lectern in front of them, and a microphone popped out.
"Welcome ladies," the voice was neutral and I couldn't tell if it was male or female, "We are so glad to have you here to bring you back into the world of education!"
At those words the person threw their hands into the air in excitement. And at those words, the lecture hall was filled with collective groans and mumbles. Katy showed me a face and Melanie smiled anxiously.
