TBC Chapter 50: Step by Step

Everything fell silent.

Ni hindi nga ako makatingin sa direksyon ni Kai. Pinilit kong ituon ang aking tingin sa harapan habang nagmamaneho siya.

He's been renting a car since he got here. That's what he told me when he held the door open for me to get in.

Ganoon pa rin ang tibok ng puso ko. Sobrang bilis na pakiramdam ko ay malalagutan ako ng hininga. Ramdam ko ang init sa aking katawan at pakiramdam ko ay pagpapawisan ako kahit na nakatodo ang aircon ng sasakyan. Kung bakit pa kasi sinabi ko yun ng malakas. Hindi ko man lamg napag-isipan ang mga sinabi ko.

Di nagtagal ay tumigil kami sa red light. Naramdaman ko ang paglingon niya sa akin. Hindi ko lang napaghandaan ang biglang paglapit niya sa akin.

His face is on the same level as mine. Naamoy ko ang kanyang pabango na mistulang nakadikit sa kanyang balat. Nahuli ko din ang amoy ng kanyang hininga. It was warm and smelled like vanilla. I don't know if holding my breath seemed to be obvious. Sana hindi.

"Wear your seatbelt. It's better to be safe." He pulled the seatbelt around me and locked it in place.

I blinked once or twice before I felt his palm ruffle my hair.

Sinundan ko siya ng tingin and saw him smile at me.

He's so warm. Just then he revved up the engine and went forward.

I don't know what is wrong with me. Pero pakiramdam ko may kakaiba.

Kumpara sa ulan kanina sa hospital ay mas lalong lumakas pa ito na para bang halos matakpan na ng bugso ng ulan ang windshield ng sasakyan.

He was driving carefully and quite slow I might add.

"Hmm. Would it hurt if you speed a little?" I asked.

He didn't looked at me and remained fixated on the road.

"It's dangerous if I get too comfortable." He retorted.

Just then, the car scretched as he turned to the left to give way to the ambulance who's rushing to the right. I almost hit my head to the window if it wasn't for the seatbelt he made me wear. It's siren kept buzzing on my head even though it was out of earshot.

"I'm sorry about that. The ambulance was so fast, I almost didn't see it."

"Ah." Inda ko.

"What's the matter?" Napahawak na lamang ako sa aking ulo dahil sa nararamdaman kong pangingirot dito.

"It's na-nothing." It hurt at every word I say.

"Don't worry, we're close." His words laced with worry.

Ramdam ko pa din ang kirot sa aking ulo pero hindi na ganoon kasakit hindi katulad kanina. Hindi ko lang alam kung bakit bigla na lang naging ganun ang reaksyon ko sa tunog ng serena ng ambulansiya.

Hindi nagtagal ay tumigil na rin ang sasakyan at parang nakikisabay ang ulan dahil bigla din itong tumigil.

The place was so serene but it gives me the vibe that I've been here before.

There was this log cabin beside a lake. Trees were towering the whole place.
Bigla na lang humangin ng malakas kung kaya ay awtomatiko akong napayakap sa aking sarili.

"Let's come inside." He said and turned to the direction of the entrance.

"I imagined you renting some place other than here."

"What? Not so cool compared to Rhaven's pad?"

Pakiramdam ko ay parang bumaliktad ang sikmura ko. Paanong nalaman niya ang tungkol kay Rhaven?

And as if reading my mind he says, "Can't I do a little research?" Then he smiled at me as he opened the door for me.

The cabin was cozy. It's not that big but it's about the right size if you're alone or if ever you live with someone else.

There was a large carpet near the windows where someone can just sit and contemplate about life or read books.

While the other side has a small kitchen with a kitchen island.

"Ah." Muli akong napahawak sa aking ulo dahil sa di ko inaasahang kirot.

"You've been having these series of headache. Is there something wrong? Lemme get some meds for that."

Tumango na lamang ako at tumungo sa isa sa mga upuan sa may kitchen island.

"As I was saying earlier, of all places why a log cabin?" I asked.

I heard him chuckle while inside what I think was his room.

"It's just that, it's somewhere I would like to take my girlfriend on our anniversary."

"So you have a girlfriend huh, Kai?" I would be damned when I felt my chest hurt.

Akala ko ba headache ang meron ako? Pero bat biglang kumirot din itong dibdib ko?

"Here. It could ease your headache." He handed me the meds and quickly got me a glass of water.

"Thanks." Inubos ko na rin yung tubig.

"So, how's your girlfriend? Hindi ba siya nagalit nung iniwan mo siya?"

"Huh?"

"Sorry." I waved a hand on the air feeling stupid asking him in tagalog.

"I meant. Didn't your girlfriend get angry when you left her?" I mean he was an exchange student after all.

His smile suddenly faded as he focused his eyes on mine.

"She.. She's the one who left me."

I didn't say a word. Bumaba na lang ako sa upuan at nilapitan siya.

I didn't know what came over me. I.. I just hugged him tighly thinking that I could bring back his broken pieces together.

"Ashleigh." When I heard him call my name, I felt this warm feeling inside me.

I looked up to see his face and saw him intensely looking back at me. My breath hitched and when our lips almost met,

I drew myself away from him.

"It's getting late huh?"

"Yeah."

"I think I would want to go to bed."

"Yeah, you can have the bed." Tinalikuran ko na siya at pinuntahan ang nag iisang kwarto dito sa log cabin.

What was I even thinking going here with him? Gusto ko lang naman makasigurong makakauwi siya ng ligtas at planong magpasundo na lang sa driver pag-uwi.

But it won't hurt staying the night, right?

Because of this quarantine, I'm having so much time to ponder on continuing this book. Ni hindi ko nga alam ang direksyong tinutungo nito. It's my fault putting it on hold ng sobrang tagal, ayan tuloy.

Anyway, let us all stay hydrated and boost your immune system! Sa bahay lang po tayo and help the frontliners.
