Gabriel opened his eyes to look at my face. He was lying on the grass, using my thighs as a pillow while I gently stroked his hair. We were at the Sunken Garden, waiting for the sunset.
"Why are you asking that?" he asked, a sweet smile playing on his lips. He reached for my hand and kissed it, never breaking our eye contact.
"Sagutin mo na ang tanong ko, sige na."
Saglit siyang tumahimik upang malalim na mag-isip. Ilang segundo pa ay biglang sumeryoso ang mukha niya. "Maging hangin na lang siguro."
"Bakit?"
"Para lagi mo akong kailanganin. Iyong ikamamatay mo kapag nawala ako. Boom!" sagot niya saka tumawa nang pagkalakas-lakas.
Gusto ko siyang batukan pero kinikilig ako sa sinabi niya. Alam kong 'yon na ang pinakaseryosong sagot na makukuha ko sa kanya.
"Ikaw ba, mahal?"
"I want to be a sunflower!"
"Sunflower? Bakit?"
"Just because. I'm simply fascinated by that flower."
"What's so special about that flower?"
"Ano ka ba? Hindi mo ba alam? Sunflowers always face the sun, they face the east, knowing that's where it'll return."
"Oh, wow! Amazing." Gabriel teased, but then I continued.
"I want to have that kind of faith, gaya ng faith ng sunflower sa araw. Iyon bang kahit marami mang pagsubok na dumating sa buhay ko, I will always face the rising sun. And even in my darkest days, I will never let my faith wither. I'll patiently wait for the sun, hoping that it will rise and shine the brightest on me."
"Ang lalim naman pala no'n, mahal. Let me change my answer then. Kung sunflower ka, ako naman ang araw mo," he smiled at me.
Muli niyang dinala sa labi niya ang kamay ko at hinalikan 'yon bago magpatuloy.
"Whatever happens, no matter how many challenges we face, I want you to have that faith in me. Keep in mind that I will always be here for you. I will be your sun, I want to be the one for whom you wish to see at midnight. On your darkest days, I want to be the one who brightens your day. Just like those soft beams of the sun, I promise to shed light into the dimmest corners of your life."
