A/N - Kate's interview dress^^

✡ ✡ ✡

KATE

I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock once again. I shut it off with a yawn and slowly slid out of bed, my eyes settling on the summer dress that I'd chosen the night before. Wondering why I had chosen a dress, the memory of what my father had told me suddenly settled in: I had a job interview.

I slipped on the dress, analyzing my appearance in the mirror.

The dress was sleeveless and navy blue with white flowers all over it. It wasn't too form-fitting but settled comfortably on my small waist and fell to about mid-thigh.

I'd never been the type of girl that wears dresses. I'd always been the jeans and t-shirt type, but now that I'd moved into a place with a hotter climate, I thought that it would be a good idea for me to start wearing them.

I pulled a pair of sandals out from my closet and slid them on, making a mental note to paint my toenails when I got home from my interview. Content with my look, I headed into the bathroom to put my hair up into a high ponytail before brushing my teeth.

I grabbed my backpack from beside my desk, unplugged my phone, and dabbed my lips with some cherry lip gloss.

"Kate, you better hurry if you want some Starbucks!" My father shouted to me from the bottom of the stairs.

"Coming!" I shouted back, shutting off my bedroom light and heading down the stairs to meet him.

"Don't you look pretty," my father said, smiling in approval.

I gave him a small twirl, the dress flowing around me perfectly.

"You're going to nail this interview, I know it."

I grabbed my lunchbox from the fridge and used the tap water from the sink to take my pill before letting him lead me out to the car.

Corey saw me first and ran up to me, hugging me, making me let out a surprised yelp at the unexpected gesture. She then released me and pulled me over to another girl, who I assumed was the girl she'd told me about.

"Kate, this is Amy," Corey said, gesturing towards the girl standing beside her.

Amy smiled, displaying her perfect teeth. "Nice to meet you."

Amy was very pretty. She had long brown hair that was much darker than Corey's and soft brown eyes. She also appeared to be several inches shorter than Corey.

"You too," I said, realizing that I hadn't said anything to her in response.

Corey put her arm around my shoulders and the other around Amy's as we walked to our first-period class.

"What class do you have right now?" Amy asked me, her tone light and friendly.

"Math."

"Oh, wow! That's so cool! So do I! I can show you the way," Amy said, wiggling free from Corey's arm before taking my hand.

"Oh, you're in pre-calc too?" I asked her, surprised.

Amy and Corey both looked at me, equally shocked. "You're in pre-calc?" They both asked me in unison.

"Y-yeah," I stuttered nervously, twirling my pearl bracelet around my wrist.

I knew that taking pre-calculus as a sophomore was strange, but by the looks on their faces, you'd think that I'd just told them I was pregnant or something.

Amy smiled, sensing my discomfort. "Don't worry, I know where that class is too, my boyfriend's in it. Here, let me show you the way," she said, taking my hand once again.

I already knew the way to pre-calc, but I found myself letting her show me the way anyways. "Thanks for doing this," I said quietly as I tried to find comfort in her company as I had with Corey. But instead, I found my usual shy and quiet self brimming just beneath the surface, threatening to come out.

"Of course, newbie," Amy said, smiling. "Happy to help."
