A/N - Kyle^^

KATE

Amy waved to a boy inside the classroom, that I assumed must be her boyfriend, before she headed off to her own math class, blowing me a kiss goodbye as she had to Corey.

I nervously walked into the classroom and took the empty seat beside Amy's boyfriend.

He tapped my shoulder with his pencil, making me turn to look at him. "Hey, are you a friend of Amy's?" He whispered, his dark brown eyes meeting mine.

"Yeah, and you're her boyfriend, right?" I whispered back, scribbling down the notes that the teacher had written on the board.

"Yeah," he said, looking over my shoulder to copy my notes, "I've never seen you around before."

I continued writing as I responded, "Yeah, I'm new."

He nodded, his pencil making scratching noises against his paper. "You got a name?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm Kate."

"I'm Kyle," he said, taking my notebook once I'd finished writing everything down.

"Nice to make your acquaintance," I whispered, a little too loudly.

The teacher heard me and his eyes met mine. "Oh, dear," he said, putting down his whiteboard marker and facing the class. "I have forgotten to introduce our new student. Kate, stand up and introduce yourself."

I felt myself blush, but I stood up as confidently as I could. "Hi, I'm Kate," I said, my voice sounding much stronger than I felt.

A few students looked up, but most of them didn't and I immediately sat back down.

The teacher sighed and banged a ruler against the whiteboard, making the students that weren't paying attention suddenly look up, startled.

"If you had been paying attention," the teacher said, his voice firm, "then you would have heard that we have a new student. Now, I must also mention that she is a sophomore."

At this, every pair of eyes in the room all turn to look in my direction, making me suddenly wish that I could disappear. Instead, I just sink lower in my seat.

Kyle poked my shoulder once again, this time with his finger. "Wait, you're a sophomore?"

I could only nod while he looked at me, totally shocked. "You know that this is a senior class, right?"

I nodded again.

The shock disappeared from his expression and his lips spread into a friendly smile. "Welcome to pre-calc, blondie."

I smiled, trying not to find offense in the nickname. "Thanks, Kyle."

We exchanged numbers and decided that we could become partners for projects if it ever became necessary. He also told me that he had transferred into this class as well and that he was only a junior. I could tell right away that he and I had the possibility of becoming good friends.

The bell rang, signaling the end of class, and we each gathered our things.

"Hey, Kate, wait up," Kyle said and followed me out the door. "What class do you have next?"

"Um, U.S. history, what about you?" I responded, tucking my phone into my backpack pocket.

"Damn, I got physics. I can show you the way to your class, though, if you'd like?" He asked with a friendly smile.

I could only nod, my shyness coming back. I'd never been good at talking to boys.

He caught up to me easily and fell into a comfortable stride beside me. "So, how'd you meet Amy?"

"Oh, I'm friends with Corey," I said, the term "friend" feeling strange coming out of my mouth.

Kyle nodded, holding onto the straps of his backpack. "Corey's pretty great, she may seem like a lot when you first meet her, but she mellows down after a while."

I nodded.

"You don't talk much, do you?" He asked me with a light chuckle.

I shook my head with a small smile. "I guess not."

He smiled as well. "How did you ever become friends with Corey then?"

I glanced at him before I said, "How did you?"

He chuckled. "You have a point, well, this is U.S. history, so I guess I'll see you at lunch?"

"Yup, I'll be there."

Kyle saluted me goodbye and headed down the opposite hall. I watched him go until he disappeared. Then, with a deep breath, I opened the door to my class, making thirty pairs of eyes all turn to look right at me.
