KATE

I eased myself up out of bed, the sunlight pouring through my bedroom window. Heading to my dresser, I pulled out a white tank top with thick straps and a new pink wrap skirt that I'd gotten at Hollister with Corey.

AXEL - Hey beautiful :) Wanna hang out today?

I read his message, going to say yes, but then remembered that I'd promised Kyle that I'd tutor him.

KATE - I can't today, I'm tutoring a friend.

I hit send before I pulled on my tan boots and headed into the bathroom to brush my teeth and hair.

"Hey, blondie, are you still up to tutor me?" Kyle asked, falling into step beside me.

"Yeah, you're still cool to give me a ride, right?" I asked, opening the door to pre-calc.

"Yeah, it's no biggie," he said, following after me and taking his seat.

We fell into a comfortable silence as we listened to the teacher who'd just started to discuss a new project that would be due the next week.

"-Now, you may work in partners on this, but choose wisely because you will not get a chance to pick another one," the teacher announced.

Kyle and I both exchanged glances and smiled.

"Now you may come up to my desk to choose the problem that you will both have to solve," the teacher explained, laying a short stack of white papers onto his desk.

"Rock paper scissors?" Kyle asked me, smiling.

I laughed. "Sure, why not?"

I won, choosing rock, and strolled up to the teacher's desk, selecting the paper at the top of the stack.

"Let's see what we got," Kyle declared, looking over my shoulder.

I wrote the problem down in my notebook, already having an idea of how to solve it.

For the last twenty minutes of class, Kyle and I brainstormed on how to solve it, Kyle writing his math down on the paper while I wrote mine into my notebook. In the end, the only thing our steps had in common was the actual problem itself.

"I'm going to trust your math," Kyle stated, placing his paper into a black folder. "You seem to know what you're doing."

"Once I'm done tutoring you, maybe we can work on it," I suggested, giving him a friendly smile.

"Yeah, that sounds cool," Kyle replied.

After the bell rang, Kyle and I walked to lunch together, discussing the project.

"How the hell did you figure out how to do step three? I got confused on step one!" Kyle claimed, sounding slightly frustrated.

I squeezed his shoulder in comfort. "It's okay, you'll get it, I've been practicing math since like before high school, it just comes easier to some people, but you'll get it."

Kyle shrugged and I removed my hand. "I don't know, blondie."

We joined the lunch table, going our separate ways as he sat next to Amy and I sat beside Corey.

"Hey, how's Axel?" Corey whispered to me so that Amy and Kyle couldn't hear her.

"Good," I replied, biting into a carrot.

"Just good?" Corey asked, pressing me for details.

I blushed. "He's great actually, we made it official a few days ago," I admitted, whispering which was hard to do since I was so excited.

"That's awesome!" Corey responded, giving my hand a squeeze.

I reached for another carrot. "I guess."

"Hey, what are you guys talking about?" Kyle asked, turning toward me and Corey.

"None of your fucking beeswax," Corey retorted, glaring.

I snorted in amusement then covered up my mouth in embarrassment, but thankfully, no one seemed to even notice.
