KATE
Once I was absolutely sure that Corey was ready for her test, I let her drive me home, making sure to give her mother a hug before leaving. She'd reminded me that I was welcome over their house anytime and that I really should learn to start calling her Jen.
Once we were on the road, Corey gave my hand a squeeze. "Thanks so much for helping me out, Kate. It really helped."
I smiled. "You're going to nail that test tomorrow, I know it."
She sighed. "It'll be all thanks to you. Now, I'll be dreaming of math equations all night."
I laughed. "Then we'll both have that in common. By the way, you're still free for the sleepover at my place on Saturday, right?" I asked, feeling shy.
"Of course," Corey said, sounding excited. "I wouldn't miss it."
I gave her an awkward hug before opening the door and heading up to my house, swinging my backpack onto my shoulders.
"Hey, dad," I said, walking into the kitchen to put my water bottle that I'd gotten from Corey into the fridge.
"How was Corey's?" My father asked, looking up from his newspaper. I found myself feeling surprised at the fact that he could even read it since the house was lit so dimly.
"Corey's was awesome," I replied, taking a seat beside him.
"Thanks for letting me know about the change in plans," he said, putting down his paper.
"Yeah, of course," I said, smiling.
I'd remembered to text him while Corey was working on her math and I was grateful that I had.
"I'm going to take a shower," I said, kissing his head.
I grabbed my backpack off the floor beside my chair and swung it over one shoulder before heading up the stairs to my room.

I awoke to my father knocking lightly on my bedroom door. Surprised at the new gesture, I got out of bed, opening my door.
"Good morning," he said, his voice still rough from having just woken up. He was still in his pajamas too, a thin white t-shirt and sweatpants.
"Hey dad," I said. "What's up?"
"Can I come in? I have an idea, but I want to run it by you first," he said.
I nodded, opening my door wider and he walked in, pulling my desk chair up beside my bed. Thankfully, my outfit wasn't hanging off of it since I'd given up on choosing my outfits a day in advance. It was too much work.
I shut my door once again before getting back up onto my bed, crossing my legs beneath me. "What's this idea of yours?"
He smiled, looking the happiest that I'd seen him in a while. "Don't scream, okay?" He asked.
I nodded. "Okay..."
"Kate, how do you feel at the thought of getting a dog?" He asked, his eyes lighting up in excitement as I'm sure mine must've been as well.
"Um, you're kidding, right?" I asked, wondering how on Earth we could get one.
He shook his head. "No, not at all. Now, it wouldn't be a puppy since we're both away during the day, but we have a decent-sized backyard and we can always install a dog door on the back door and I just like the thought of having a dog."
