We sat in the empty room in the doctor's office. She sat on the table, her legs swinging off the edge. I just smiled at her, hoping to calm her a little. The doctor came in and went through the regular checkups, asking if there were any concerns she had or any changes in her health. Everything was fine, she was always boringly healthy, which was good, of course. But today she needed to get a vaccine.
The doctor set everything up, and she began to get visibly nervous.
"Hey, just breathe in and out," I told her quietly.
She took my hand, and I came to stand next to her.
"Relax your arm." The doctor told her.
She squirmed a little, clinging to my arm, looking away from the needle by burring her head into my shoulder. She gave out a long breath as the doctor took her arm, swabbing her before pressing the needle in. I just rubbed her back until the needle was taken out.
"All done." The doctor said.
"See not so bad," I said, as she broke away from me.
She shook her head, wiping a few tears from her eyes. "I'm sorry for being such a baby."
"It's okay," I told her, kissing her on the head. "I understand."
