"Come on." She said, taking my hand.

She pulled at my arm as we ran down the hallway of the animal shelter. Her excitement reminded me of a child in a candy store.

She laughed as we walked into one of the rooms.

I poked my finger into one of the cages, petting the side of a sleeping cat.

"Look at this one." She said, crouched down, looking into a cage.

She took the cat out of the cage and held it close to her chest, petting it and making soft, calming noises.

The cat looked over at me. It had bright blue eyes and tons of orange fluff, it was everything she wanted.

"Isn't he perfect?" She asked, smiling bigger than ever. "He could be our little baby." She kissed the cat on the top of his forehead.

She wanted the cat to be our baby. I knew it was just a cat, but still, we were starting our own little family. It was a big step, and it was scary.

"Yeah," I said after a pause. "He'll do just fine."
