The War-Backstory

[StrawberrySnowcone requested the backstory to be about Mystery's death and what lead up to it. I shall deliver.]

(Cake's P.O.V.) [Present time]
I was only ten when it happened. The War. A lot of buildings were destroyed. Many people died. Both gifted and non-gifted as we call them. And one of those people were my friend. My friend was killed. My friend was killed by me.
I didn't mean to kill her. It was an accident but even then, I don't forgive myself. I can't forgive myself.
She was so confused. She didn't understand. She woke up and then she went back to sleep. All because of me.
Alex was the one to start the war. He said he was sick and tired of having to live a life of fear. A life where we have to hide to survive.
"What's the point in hiding? They'll find us. They always do. If we continue to hide, continue to not fight back then we will die. I'm not having that. I say we fight. Fight for our lives!"
They called him insane. Said that we're much safer hiding but he doesn't agree. He says we'd be safer if we fight back.
I wasn't sure what to do. Alex is right but... If we do then people will die. I don't want that but it seems to be our best choice. To fight. To kill. For a chance to live. Live a normal life again. A life where we didn't have to be afraid anymore. Live in peace.
Jack was unsure as well but eventually agreed that fighting was the best choice. People argued about this but joined us later on.
Mystery wasn't there with us. She was with them. They have done something to her. They have turned her evil. Corrupted her. Had her do their bidding and help them kill the gifted.
She was dangerous. Extremely dangerous. Many gifted were killed by her because of them. The other gifted say she's evil but Alex, Jack, and I know the truth.
We planned. Planned on what we were going to do. How we would attack, how we would escape, how we would kill, and a bunch of other stuff.
Just before the war started, Alex called me. He said he wanted to talk to me.
"Hey Cake."
"Hi Alex."
"I...wanted to talk to you."
"What do you want to tell me?"
"You don't have to fight."
"Huh?"
"I know you don't like to fight. I know you hate violence. That's why I'm saying you don't have to fight. You can help heal people and evacuate them."
"No. I want to help. I'm going to help."
"There are other ways for you to help."
"Well, I want to help by fighting."
"Are you sure?"
"Mhm. I'm sure."
"Then...take this."
He handed me a necklace. It had beads and a shard in the middle.

[Kinda like this necklace but the shard is pink and it has nine red beads on each side.]
"Huh? Why are you giving me this?"
"It's not a normal necklace."
"It's not? It looks like one though."
"It really does look like one, huh? Guess I did a good job disguising it."
"I'm so confused."
"The shard is special. Magical. I made it look like a necklace because the shard is very powerful and helpful."
"Why are you trusting me with this?"
"You want the real reason or the reason that makes you happy?"
"...The second one..."
"To protect you."
"Huh?"
"The necklace will protect you when you need protection."
"Wow... Thanks Alex."
"Don't mention it. We have to get ready now. The war is about to start."
"Y-Yeah."
We went and joined Jack and the other gifted. This is it. The war is about to start. The war that will determine the fates of everyone here. We just had to wait for the bells to chime and the war will start.
Some time goes by and the bells finally chime. The War has begun.
Many people died. More were to die later on. We were winning. Everything was going well until she showed up. Mystery.
We had to be extremely careful. If we weren't,  we were going to die. Many, many people died when she showed up. It was chaotic. As long as we still had Alex standing, we were fine. But of course, that can't happen.
Mystery hit Alex while he was trying to protect the others. He barely lived the hit. He then opened a portal.
"Jack. Get the others out of here."
"What about you?!"
"I'll manage. Just get the others out of here! It isn't safe anymore."
Jack became to evacuate the others while Alex and I continued to fight.
"Alex, please go with the others. You won't survive much longer!"
"I'm not leaving Cake. I'm going to fight."
"Please!"
"No."
I didn't want him to die. He had to get out of here. He was right in front of the portal. I could push him through it. He would be safe if I did.
I waited until Jack went back to fight. Once he did I pushed Alex through the portal and closed it.
"Did you just-"
"I had to. He wouldn't survive much longer."
"Right..."
Jack and I kept fighting. Almost every last one of the non-gifted were down. All we had to worry about was Mystery.
Jack managed to get a few hits before Mystery got one on him. Just like Alex, he barely lived.
I opened up a portal and pushed him through it. I closed it right afterwards. Now, it was just me and her.
I remember a certain power of mine. A power I call The Cleansing Spikes. The spikes would eliminate the evil inside if a person. The person wouldn't die or take any form of damage from it. If the spikes were to hit a normal person then it would kill them instantly. It's what some people would call a one hit ko.
If I could hit her with that then she would return to normal and the war would be over. We would win.
What I didn't notice is that is was heading straight towards me. I couldn't more. I just froze. I closed my eyes bracing for impact.
All of a sudden the necklace glowed. Just like Alex said, it would protect me. She hit me but I didn't take damage. It did nothing to me. She tried to hit me again and again but nothing happened.
This is it. I can get her. I summoned the spikes to strike her and eliminate the evil within her. What happened next shocked me. She went back to normal.
Before I could cancel the spell it was too late. It striked her and killed her instantly. I remember her eyes. How wide they were. Eyes that once used to shine faded.
I fell to my knees. I killed her. I just killed my friend. I just took an innocent life.
The other non-gifted retreated. We won the war but at what cost? We lost so many people. We tried to bring back our friend but now she lays among the rest of the dead. I didn't know what to do. All I could do was cry. I cried and cried and cried.
After who knows how long, I got up. It was over. She was dead and I would have to try and accept that. I opened a portal to join the others when it hit me. I don't know where they are. We have been separated.
We will meet again. I'm sure of it. I took a deep breath and walked though the portal, ready to live the life I once had.

It's done. I finished it. I might be doing another backstory but this time with a certain character. I'm not telling you who the character is or what the backstory will be about. If you can guess the character and the reason why then I will write it. As long as you get the character right then I will write it. You only get one chance. Goodbye!]
