Recap:
"Your son is waiting for you... would you like to meet him?"Maxon POV:
I stand up, socked by the doctors words. "W-wh-wha-what?" I stutter. "No, my son... he is... he is..." I sit down and place my head in my hands. "Is America okay?"
"Well..." the doctor says, "the surgery went well, but sir, your wife lost a lot of blood and at this point we just have to let her wake up on her own." He places a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Because of the cut on her side and the blood loss we had to remove the baby from your wife's stomach."
"Is he okay?"
"The baby-"
"Cory, we are naming him Cory." I interrupt.
"Cory is 2 months premature, so he is small. But he will need to stay in NICU until he is completely heathy. Would you like to see him?"
I nod, my head still in my hands. I stand and follow him to the NICU, when I walk in I see my son, my tiny little son. I walk over to him, he has a tube in his nose and a diaper on, but it's too big for him. The doctor removes two plastic panels so I can touch him and pulls over a chair for me.
I sit down and reach my hands in, "can you bring my daughters here please?" I ask.
"Yes," he smiles, he loves my girls. He is their doctor.
When he leaves, I curl my hands around his head. "Hi Cory, I'm your daddy. Your mommy isn't here and I'm sorry about that." I feel tears in my eyes. "Your sisters are coming soon and they can't wait to meet you."
"Daddy?" I hear one of my girls ask. They come up behind me and wrap their arms around my neck. "We love you daddy."
"I love you girls too." I turn to face them, Chase wipes the tears from my face. "Would you two like to meet your brother?"
Chase POV:
He is so tiny, that is all I can think when I see my baby brother and that he looks just like my dad, like a carbon copy. "Is he okay?" my sister and I are reaching in to touch our brother.
"Well, Cory is really small so it might be a while before he will be able to leave the hospital." Says dad.
"Dad he looks just like you!" Charlie squeals.
"Char not in my ear!" Chase exclaims.
They start to fight, I lean down to talk to my son. "You'll get used to them Cor." I laugh. "Girls!" I shout, "calm down! Your brother is trying to sleep."
They apologize. We watch Cory for a while when Chase says, "can we bring mom's bed in here? I think it'll help both of them."
"That is a great idea," I tell her gently. I kiss each of their heads and say that I will be right back.
I walk to America's room, there is only a nurse in with her but when she sees me she bows her head and leaves. I walk over and press my lips to hers. Almost like a fairy tale, but she is supposed to wake up.
I sit in a chair and take her hands in mine, "Hello my dear." I laugh, "I think that is the first time I've called you that and you haven't said anything." I kiss her hand. "America, Cory is here and as healthy as he can be at 2 months premature. I need you here with me America, you are my rock. I need you to wake up," I lose it, I sob onto the bed.
"Oh Maxon!" my sister-in-law May exclaims she wraps her arms around my shoulders. I hug her back and sob into her chest. Pretty soon America's whole family is there with me.
"The baby?" her mother asks.
"He is in the NICU, with the girls." I say once my sobs calm down.
The doctor walks in, "Sir, you wanted to see me?"
"Yes, we, me and the girls, think that it would help both Cory and America if we move her into the NICU."
"Yes, I think that too."
****1 and one half week later****
Maxon POV:
"He is so small," Chase says holding her brother for the first time.
"Yea he is. Why don't you put him down and go find your sister?" I say. She nods and hands the baby to the nurse.
I sit in the chair holding America's hand, "Hello my dear."
She squeezes my hand, "Not... your... dear."
