The next morning, John and George were still asleep on the couch, both still in a sitting position and leaning against each other. They had gone to bed a little after 5am. A noise startled John and he woke up immediately. Then, he looked around in the direction of the sound. It had come from the kitchen so he knew it was Cynthia making some breakfast for the three of them.
John checked the time. 8:43am. Still too early. He thought to himself. He realized he couldn't get back to sleep so he decided to try to keep busy with a puzzle he was in the middle of doing. He decided to go with Paul's advice and do the puzzle the way that apparently everyone did puzzles. Well, everyone according to Paul. John always thought Paul was wrong but, oh well. He was going to try it.
He set the 1000 pieces on the coffee table and spread them out. Then, he started looking for the sides of the puzzle. George stirred on the couch, then, fell to the side, waking him up.
"Mornin' Geo. Sleep well?"
"I guess so. Time is it?"
"About 8:45am."
"Didn't sleep alot did I?"
"Nope. I woke up not too long ago meself. To be exact, it was two minutes ago."
"So, you decided to do a puzzle?"
Then, John remembered. "Oh snap." He stood up and forced George to his feet. "We have 15 minutes to get ready for our bike ride. Get dressed!"
"Do we have to today?"
"Yes. I know yer tired. So am I. Once we're on the bikes, we should stay awake."
"Should? What happen to 'have to'?"
"Okay. We 'have to'. Better?"
"Yeh. I'll see ye in a minute."
The two went to their own bedrooms to get dressed for their bike ride. Ringo and Paul had dropped by right after the two had left the living room. Cynthia let them in.
"Are they here?" Ringo asked.
"Yeh. They might still be asleep. Check the couch."
"Couch? They both slept on the couch?"
"Yeh. Must've fallen asleep talking or something."
"Hmm. Okay. I'll do the honors of waking them up. Maybe they forgot about today."
Just as he said that, George appeared from the top of the stairs. "Ey. Yer early."
Paul looked up. "Ey Geo. Is John ready?"
"No. He's still getting dressed. He'll be down in a minute." He said as he walked down the stairs.
"Okay. We've been waiting for hours." Ringo said smiling.
"Oh you have not. Only a few minutes maybe. But not hours."
Ringo laughed. "Okay. Maybe I was exadurating just a tad bit."
"A tad bit? Nah. It was more than a tad bit."
John appeared and headed downstairs as well. "Well. Look who it is. Yer early."
"I know. We thought we would get a head start. Wow, you both look dead."
"Thanks. I feel it." John mentioned as he sat on his couch.
"John, come on."
"Can't I have brekkie first?"
"After. It should be done then."
"Alright. Alright. I'm coming. But if I die from starvation, that's on you."
"Yer not going to die. Come 'ead. Lets get going. Once again, we're losing daylight."
"Its not even 9am."
"I know."
*********
On the bike ride, both John and George kept silent. They also kept trying to stay awake throughout the ride. Ringo had noticed that they had been too quiet and decided to speak up.
"Ey, what's up with you two?"
John saw Ringo in the corner of his eye. "What do you mean?"
"You and Geo. Yer both really quiet today. Any particular reason?"
"Uh, no." George answered.
"Yer lying."
"Look, we just stayed up 'til 5am. That's all. 'alf of us are beyond tired."
"Well why didn't you stay home today?" Paul asked.
"Because this is pretty much us hanging out with our friends and enjoying a nice bike ride. That's why."
"Next time, if you stay up that late, tell us. We won't mind doing this without you."
"Look, we're capeable of doing this as much as you and Ringo. We'll be fine."
"Okay. But listen to my words. I don't want you falling asleep on yer bikes."
"Its not going to happen."
"Never say it won't happen. It could very well happen. Remember what happened last time I said nothing is going to happen to me. A quake hit." Paul mentioned.
"Oh, right. That's karma for saying it won't happen."
"Just shut up and face the sidewalk. Yer annoying me already."
"Play nice lads." John said as he glanced at the two before facing the sidewalk again. "We don't want you two getting into some kind of argument while on these death machines."
"What are you talking about John? They aren't death machines."
"When yer tired, that's what they look like. Death machines."
"Yer not about to fall asleep on us are ye?"
"No. What makes you say that?"
"Just the way it looks. Once we're done here, then you can nap all day. How's that sound?"
"Like a bloody good idea. I need my beauty sleep."
"I thought Paul was the one that wanted beauty sleep. After all, he has to keep up with his beauty." Ringo said smiling.
"Ey! Okay. One more remark about how 'pretty' I am is getting kicked off their bikes. Literally!"
"I think Macca may be the prettiest person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting." John said testing Paul. He wanted to see if Paul would actually do it.
And he did.
