~Day 3~It had been exactly 24 hours since Liam had been hauled out of the hospital by two intimidating officers. All I could do was sit in my hospital bed and watch TV to try and get my mind off what he was going through. After being stuck together on an island for over 2 weeks it was nerve-wracking to be apart from him. Just then Nurse Nat entered into my room.
"Alright honey, you have been cleared of your injuries and are ready to go." She said looking down at her clipboard and placing a pair of crutches in the room. "Doctor has orders for you to stay off your foot for the next two weeks until your stitches can be taken out." She then unfolded the wheel chair from the corner of the room and motioned for me to stand up. She handed me the ugliest pair of sweatpants imaginable and a baggy t-shirt before helping me to the bathroom to change. I looked at myself in the mirror trying to give myself a pep talk.
"You can do this Cam. Like Liam said, just tell the truth." But I was afraid of the truth. I was even more afraid it wasn't the truth and that I was going mentally insane from being on an island for 2 weeks. Nurse Nat then knocked on the door asking if I was almost finished to which I replied a quick "Yep!" after pulling the t-shirt over my head. I opened the door to find two officers in uniform standing in the doorway.
"These men will see you out." Nurse Nat said as she helped me into the wheelchair and pushed me over to one of the men.
"We have it from here, thank you." One of them said grabbing the handles of my chair while the other grabbed my crutches.
"Where are we going?" I asked feeling the nerves of potentially entering outside into World War III.
"RAF Base on Ascension Islands." The guard behind me said wheeling me down the hallway and towards the front door. "Keep her covered." one of the guards ordered as they both closed in tightly on my wheelchair as they opened the door. Almost immediately I was blinded with flashing lights.
"There she is-"
"Cameron Woods, RAF soldier of District 24 is alive!"
"Cameron you were missing for over 2 weeks tell us how you survived!"
I quickly covered my face and gasped as the questions came hurdling in. "No photographs! Hey back away!" the 2 men said to the paparazzi that had found their way to the edge of the base. They shoved their way in between the cameras and my wheelchair until we reached a black SUV. They helped me up into it as the yelling continued from outside.
"Where is Major Payne-"
"Did Cameron sustain any life-threatening injuries?-"
"We've gotten word this might be a potential attack from North Korea, is there any confirmation on this lead-"
Slam! As the door shut all the ruckus from outside was toned out and I could finally breathe. "How did they know I was here?" I asked, assuming the information of where Liam and I were taken would be confidential.
"The media stops at nothing. I wouldn't be surprised if they are at the tarmac." The guard said as we drove off.
We drove about 15 minutes before reaching the airport. As we pulled in I saw another group of journalists and paparazzi standing by the gate, but thankfully the car was let in the back and we were able to avoid them. The guards opened the door and grabbed my wheelchair for me, I slowly climbed into it and the pushed me up a ramp and into the RAF airplane. Thankfully being in the Air Force I didn't have to be eyed by public passengers. They situated me in close to the door and told me we would arrive early the next morning. Needless to say this was going to be the longest flight of my life.
