~Day 1~
I looked ahead in line, nervously tapping my right foot. It had been almost 20 minutes and I still wasn't at the front of the line. Apparently, that's what you get for having the last name of Woods. The bus ride with a bunch of smelly boys was everything but enjoyable. The only upside was I got my own pair of seats from my last name and my gender.
The back of the entry hallway was so cramped with everyone having one suitcase, I had just been able to actually get inside the entry room of the Royal Air Force camp less than 5 minutes ago.
The sun was already starting to go down as the bus ride was a full 5 hours, taking up a chunk of the day. Pictures of previous Royal Air Force officers lined the walls making me stare up in awe. That was going to be me.
"Next!" The Major called out as the boy in front of me reached for his uniform. I was next...and I had yet to see another girl in our line beside me. That's what happens when you live in a patriarchal district.
"Next!" He called again as I walked up and stood in front of him. He was of average height, blonde hair, blue eyes, looked to be about 21 or 22 and had beautifully straight teeth.
"Cameron Woods?" He asked confusedly as he looked up and cocked an eyebrow at me like I was a foreigner.
"Yes sir." I replied as I nodded my head as he looked back down onto his clipboard. He looked behind me, then realizing I was the last one in line he furrowed his eyebrows down at the paper.
"District 24?" He asked making me nod my head and repeat "Yes sir." He grabbed the intercom off his uniform saying a code number and for someone most likely important with just as much or more authority to report down to the entry building.
A few seconds later a man with black hair, hazel eyes, stubble on his cheeks, and wearing the same uniform as the man standing before me showed up. He also looked to in his early twenties making me wonder how they could become Majors at such a young age.
"Horan?" He asked making the man in front of me turn his clipboard so he could see.
"She's the only girl in District 24 of England that's ever made it this far in the training progress, we thought she was male from her name. We don't have a separate room for females in Payne's department." Horan explained as the new man looked up at me and back down to the clipboard.
"I have four females in my department but she needs to stay with her district department because we run on different schedules." I looked over at the new man's uniform and could see the name of Malik printed on it giving me some clue of what his name was. Horan sighed, looking down at the clipboard before looking back up with me.
"We will have to put you in Major Payne's department for the time being. What's your shoe size?" He asked as he walked to the other side of the entry hall where the female clothing was placed.
"Size seven." I replied as I pulled the uniform out of his hands and the shoes.
"Follow me Miss Woods, we'll get you situated in nicely." He said as Major Malik left the room and Major Horan took me into a back hallway. We passed multiple doors listed with district numbers as that is what England is divided into now. My district particularly is majorly male dominated leaving little room for female success. "You'll be in the same hall as the boys, but we'll clear a bed next to Payne's office until we find another spot for you."
"That's alright, never had a room to myself anyways, always had to share it with at least two brothers." I commented as he unlocked the hall door and walked in as all the heads of the boys snapped up to the door. We walked down the middle of the rows of bunk beds as we headed back towards what was ultimately an office.
