Peeta
Its been a week since Katniss was taken away from me.Its also been a week since my family died. I will never feel my dads comforting arms wrap around me when I am upset. I will never hear my mothers laugh echo through the room. I will never play with my annoying two older brothers. I will never have family dinners. I will never be the same. I think as I look at the remains of my family's bakery. They died because of me. Katniss is gone because of me. I am a monster. I walk through the rubble of my childhood, the memories are all I have left. I walk through the district and see thousands of bodies; of the people who didn't listen to Gale and tried to run. I walk to the Victors Village and see its untouched. I then walk to my home.
As I walk the memories play through my head like a slide show. I see my family and I eating dinner, my brothers hugging me trying to comfort me when the the Quell was announced, my father hugging me to get rid of the nightmares, my mom kissing the top of head, and my family and i playing ball in the yard. I see a family photo of us smiling genially at the camera so I grab it. I then go up to my parents room and see my mothers promise ring sitting on the table. I grab it and stare at it. I unconsciously sit on the bed. The ring. This ring symbolized my dad's love for my mother when they were younger. It was a simple gold band with the in graving "I will never let you go." I put it in my pocket then walk out of their bedroom before more memories come in.
I then go to my older brothers' room. My two older brothers were my best friends. We used to joke around with each other, but when they needed to be concerned older brothers they did everything they were suppose to. They were the best siblings. When I was reaped they were so dazed they weren't able to volunteer. When I spoke to them right before i was suppose to go into my first games they cried on my shoulders and apologized over and over again then started making jokes. I exit their room so I don't cry I won't cry.
Leaving the house was harder then deciding to enter it. I take a deep breath and step out the door looking backwards one last time. I then cross the yard and enter Katniss's house. I spin on my heel at the sound of a hiss. In the kitchen doorway, back arched, ears flattened, stands the tomcat that can make a little girl the happiest person in the world. "Buttercup," I say. Thousands of people are dead, but he has survived and even looks well fed. On what?
He can get in and out of the house through a window they always left ajar in the pantry. He must have been eating field mice. I refuse to consider he is eating the alternative.
I squat down and extend a hand. "Come here, boy." Not likely. He's angry at his abandonment. Besides, I'm not offering food, and my ability to provide scraps has always been my main redeeming quality to him. He blinks those unpleasant yellow eyes.
"Want to see Prim?" I ask. Her name catches his attention. Besides his own, it's the only word that means anything to him. He gives a rusty meow and approaches me. I pick him up, stroking his fur, then go to the closet and dig out Katniss's game bag and stuff him in. There's no other way I'll be able to carry him on the hovercraft, and he means the world to Prim it can make her happy.
In my headset, I hear Haymitch's voice telling me we must go back. But the game bag has reminded me of one more thing that I want to get for Mrs.Everdeen. I sling the strap of the bag over the back of a chair and dash up the steps to Katniss's bedroom. Inside the closet hangs her father's hunting jacket. Before the Quell, she told me she brought it here from the old house, thinking its presence might be of comfort to her mother and sister when she was dead. Thank goodness, or it'd be ash right now.
I move through the downstairs reluctant to make any sound in the silence. I pick up a few remembrances: a photo of Mr. and Mrs.Everdeen on their wedding day, a blue hair ribbon for Prim, the family book of medicinal and edible plants. The book falls open to a page with yellow flowers and I shut it quickly because it was my brush that painted them. I exit the house and see the hover craft landing right outside the village.
