Lost Battle

"Anong nangyari, miss?" the young nurse asked as she inspected my wounds. Nakaupo na ako sa isang monoblock chair and was now being tended by the nurse.

"Natapilok po ako tapos nagasgasan yung siko ko pagkahulog ko," I explained. She just nodded at me in response.

"Sandali lang kukuha lang ako ng first aid kit," sabi niya as she disappeared into the room of medicinal supplies.

Natahimik naman ang buong clinic nang umalis ang nurse.

I almost had the strong urge to run out the door but unfortunately, I can't do that because I'd look pathetic limping to reach the door.

Hindi ko alam kung bakit, of all places, dito pa ako pinaupo ng nurse sa upuan na nakaharap sa kama na hinihigaan ni Sky. Hindi ko tuloy alam kung saan ibabaling ang tingin ko. Winter stood beside me.

He whispered to if I was okay kaya naman ay tumingala ako upang tignan siya at tumango.

His phone suddenly rang echoing through the walls of the clinic. Kinuha niya ito and asked if he could take the call. Umoo ako ngunit mukhang hindi siya sigurado kung aalis siya sa tabi ko o hindi.

"It's fine," I whispered softly so only he can hear. I gave him a small smile and a thumbs up. He just nodded and said he would be quick.

The tension was impalpable. Not even Phoenix and Winter were talking.

I want to get out of here as soon as possible.

Nakita ko naman sa gilid ng aking mga mata na pilit na umupo si Sky. She was wincing as she did so, kaya naman ay tinulungan siya ni Phoenix.

She, who was oblivious to the tension around her, suddenly spoke.

"What happened to you, Saf?" she asked worriedly.

Napatingin ako sa kanya.

"Nothing. Nadulas lang ako. The road was kind of slippery because of the rain." I shrugged as it was nothing when in reality, I wanted to curse and slap myself for being so stupid.

"OMG! Are you okay?" she asked. I just nodded.

I almost wanted to drag Winter from outside the clinic because it felt really awkward being alone here with the two of them.

Luckily, the nurse came back hurriedly. She had a first aid kit with her and immediately tended my wounds. She first cleaned my wounds and started applying Betadine. I winced every time the cotton touches my wounds. Napapatingin naman sa akin ang babaeng nurse at mukhang natatakot every time I react.

Great.

Hindi yata ito ang nurse na talagang nakaistasyon dito. Mukhang intern lang siya o di kaya'y assistant na hindi masyadong alam ang ginagawa.

Nang matapos siya sa mga sugat ko sa siko, mabilis siyang tumayo at napasampal sa kanyang noo.

"Oo nga pala! Nasprain ka hindi ba?" nag-aalalang tanong niya.

I nodded boredly.

Mukhang nagpanic naman ito.

"Hala! Nasaan yung kasama mo? Kailangan mong mailipat sa kama!" sabi niya na parang napuruhan ako ng matindi.

It's just a damn sprain.

Sasabihin ko palang sana na nasa labas lang ang kasama ko at pwedeng niya itong tawagin upang alalayan ako papunta sa kama pero hindi ko na natuloy nang biglang may tumayo sa gilid na nagpatigil sa akin.
