This chapter is from Kai's perspective, just to avoid confusion :)

Kai dropped to his knees, coughing up clots of blood, wheezing. Cole raced to his teammate's side, rubbing his back.

"Kai, stop pushing yourself. You need to stop-"

"I'm fine." He snapped, swiping at the blood on his mouth. The spiky-haired boy attempted to push himself up off the brick ground, using his knees as leverage. He failed miserably, sinking back onto the ground, his hands bracing his fall as he coughed up more blood.

"Hey, guys!" Nya's bubbly voice filled the almost quiet room. She made her way through the maze of training equipment, two plastic grocery bags in her small hands. "I just picked up a watermelon with the groceries-" The bags dropped to the floor in an instant.

Nya raced over to her brother's side, pressing a gentle hand on his back. "Kai are you-?"

"I said. I'm fine." He hated being sick. Not because I was painful, not because he was hacking up blood clots onto the stone ground he used to win every fight on. He hated being treated differently. He wanted his family to be normal around him. Act as if nothing had ever changed in the first place and he was still very, very capable.

Although Kai knew he was not, it was so very easy to convince himself that he was. But with the team growing more and more concerned about his health every single day, every single hour, it was so hard to believe he was going to be okay.

The cancer was only getting worse. When he had been diagnosed, the pain was almost unbearable at that moment.

The doctors apologized, stating that he might not have that much time left to live. It was extremely common with pancreatic cancer. It would go unnoticed for so long and by the time they had diagnosed someone, it was the last stage.

"Kai, you need to rest." Nya pushed.

Now, all he wanted, if he was going to die, was to be treated equally.

"I'm fine, sis." Kai pressed his hands to the pavement, pushing himself onto his wobbly feet. "I'll finish this match with Cole, then I'll go inside."

"NO!" His sister grabbed his upper arm, squeezing tightly. Despite how small she was, her grip was strong, keeping his feet grounded. "You have to go rest. Now."

"Nya, sis. I said I'm fine, like, three times. I promise you that I'm-"

"NO!" Her voice cracked as she stamped her foot down on the ground. "No, Kai. Stop pretending you're fine. Stop pretending you're just throwing up blood every night because of some injury you got while training or...or on some mission! Give it up Kai! I'm sorry to tell you this but you're not okay!"

Kai blinked back the tears in his eyes, staring his sister in the face, a glare lingering on his face.

Nya rolled her eyes, sighing sadly as she pushed past him. "I'll go fix you a bath."

Kai swallowed the lump in his throat, ignoring the hand Cole held out to him and shoving his way through the equipment. By the time he was ready, the bath was cold.

Kai woke up, his skin gleaming with cold sweat. The memory receded into the back of his mind.

It was always like this. Something good would happen, but then it would hit him that he just had a little bit of time left to live. Biting his lip, he turned over, squinting as he flicked the lamp on as he reached for his phone. He'd let Y/n's place a while ago, settling a deal to get coffee with her tomorrow at nine a.m before she had to get to work.

It was currently five a.m. Kai hadn't gotten more than three hours of sleep. As soon as he had gotten home, he collapsed onto his bed, his sweatshirt still soaked from the heavy rain. He had smiled like a wild idiot until his eyes couldn't stay open anymore.

And that smile returned as soon as he had thought of her. Y/n.

She never hesitated to treat him like he was just a normal person who hadn't tried to jump off a building. She was the only person who hadn't pretended things were normal, but rather treated him like nothing was wrong.

And now he had a chance to make her his. Although his life was short, this was exactly how Kai wanted to live the rest of it. Silly dates, too much coffee as their always.

His mind wandered, thinking of all the cute things they could do, and some of the not so cute things.

His stupid grin was stuck on is face as he sent out a text to Y/n, a giddy feeling welling up in his stomach. Kai knew he wouldn't be able to sleep for the rest of the night. Some part of him knew he would get lost thinking about what he would tell Y/n. He didn't want to make her fall in love with him and then have to tell her that she was in love with a man that was already dead.

Despite all the worry piling up inside of him, the thought of Y/n made Kai unbelievably happy. Just thinking about that goofy smile, or how shy she could be at times. He was especially fond of that face she made when she was annoyed with his teasing.

He was missing her hugs. Although he had only had a few, he wanted to make her smile every day. He wanted to make sure that nothing bad would ever happen to her because, for all the little things she did for him, she deserved the world.

Y/n. A beautiful girl who deserves the world but would never ask anyone for it. Beautiful.

Kai sighed, wrapping his arms around his shirtless body and grinning. He'd been burned in the past, and perhaps he'd stay burned forever, but Y/n was turning that burn into a scar that he would get used to. A scar that would just be a reminder of what he'd gone through - a display of how strong he was.

He couldn't make someone else happy if he wasn't willing to be happy himself. And he wanted nothing more than to make Y/n as happy as she made him.
