The doctor watched as the child fell back into the chair, unconscious.
"Vell zhen, zhat make zhings much easier, doesn't it? Especially vith how ve don't have any anesthetics..."
A white dove with blood splattered across its chest cooed as it flew down onto the child's head. Medic sighed "No, no Archimedes, ve sadly cannot experiment on zhem. Miss Pauling made sure to let me know of zhat." He was a little annoyed at the fact that he couldn't, but he understood Miss Pauling's reasoning. The dove cooed again, in what the doctor took as sadness "I know, I know, I vish I could too, but sometimes zhings don't go zhe vay jou'd like zhem to." The dove flew back up to his perch to watch with the rest of the doves. The doctor then proceeded to cut along their jeans so that he could remove the bullet from the kid's leg. Once he had removed the bullet, he smiled and rubbed his hands together as he went over to the end of the operating table and used his medigun to patch up the rest of the wound. When he had finally finished, he removed his gloves and took off his lab coat, and left the room to see Miss Pauling waiting outside.
"How did it go? Are they alright?"
"Jes, zhey are just fine. Luckily zhey fainted before I began, so zhey didn't have to deal vith the pain of being avake during zhe procedure."
"Wouldn't you have been able to give them something to numb it or make them fall asleep?"
"...Ve are all out of zhat."
The doctor slightly lied when saying that; they had some, but he didn't want to use it because it wouldn't be as fun for him. Miss Pauling sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. "I'll be sure to get you more then." the doctor nodded in a solemn manner, not really wanting to get the anesthetics. But it's not like he could tell her not to get them.
"Anyvay, I came out here to ask jou vhat jou vant to do vith zhem." he said this with a feigned concern, which quickly moved to a small maniacal smile. "I personally recommend giving zhem amnestics so zhat zhey don't remember vhat happened. And zhen maybe drop zhem off vhere jou found zhem." He said the last part in a more matter-of-factly manner. Miss Pauling looked at him and quickly shook her head while saying, "What?! No- no, no I can't do that I owe them this." She composed herself and continued. "I'll ask them where they live, and then I can have them dropped off there." Medic rose a brow, somewhat confused at Miss Pauling's current mannerisms. "Vhy are jou so intent on helping them?" Miss Pauling looked at him with what was surprise, which then merged into confusion. "Medic- I shot them- a child. They were an innocent bystander and I shot them. I owe them this." The doctor rolled his eyes, annoyed at her response. "Ja, I get it, jou owe zhem zhis because jou shot zhem. But I feel like zhere's somezhing else going on zhat jou're not telling me." Miss Pauling sighed and scratched her head awkwardly, looking away from the doctor and towards the door that led to the room the child resided in. "I'm.... not entirely sure to be completely honest. It's just something about them." She shrugged not knowing what else to say. Deep in thought, she continued. "I guess they just remind me of someone." Medic scoffed jokingly at her. "Who, jourself? Miss Pauling, zhat's not like jou." She laughed quietly and shook her head. "No, no of course not. They remind me of someone else. I'm not sure who though. They just feel... familiar?" She shrugged and sighed while speaking of the last part, because she truly had no idea why she felt this way.
"Hm. Vell anyvay I have to go vait vith zhem until zhey vakes up so that zhey doesn't do anyzhing stupid."
"Okay, you go do that. Let me know when they wake up so that I can come out of hiding."
"Hiding?"
"From Scout."
"Oh, jes, of course."
Medic left back into the room where the child lay resting, while Miss Pauling went to go hide from Scout. As the hours passed, the doctor read in a chair next to them as he waited for them to wake up. And Miss Pauling hid in an office-like room, which was made for her so that whenever she passed through, she could still do some work. She worked to pass the time and kept away from Scout, until he ended up finding out about her coming by.
It was when Heavy came back to the rec room after being asked for by Medic.
"What'd the doc need from ya this time?" The dark-skinned Scott questioned. "Another bloody brilliant experiment of his?" He made his sarcasm clear when he called the doctor's experiments 'brilliant'. The Heavy let out a breath of air and sat down on the couch next to him. "No, doktor needed help moving little child to operating table." The Demoman nodded and took a swig from his bottle. "Aye, fair enough." it took a moment for the man to realize something, and squinted Heavy, trying to make sense of what the man had said. "Wait- didja say a 'child'?" Heavy nodded and the Demoman looked at him in shock. "And you're just gonna let 'im experiment on 'em?!" Even the rest of the mercs that resided in that room seemed interested as so what was going on, with varying levels of concern. They all had the same thought cross their minds. Why would there be a child in this base of mercenaries? Heavy shook his head and looked as if he were thinking back to something. "Miss Pauling was with little child, so she will not let doktor experiment."
"Did someone say Miss Pauling?"
The mercs groaned as a certain Scout entered the room. "What? It's an honest question!" There was a wispy noise in the corner of the room as a certain Spy uncloaked and lit a cigarette. "I wouldn't recommend 'ou to visit 'er at zhis time." Scout looked annoyed about Spy, but joyful at the fact the infamous Miss Pauling was there. "So she is here! Wait- why not?" Scout frowned, confused by Spy's words. Why would Miss Pauling not want to see him? Spy sighed and took a drag from his cigarette before trying to say something, but was rudely interrupted by Scout. "You know what, this is good! Well, no, it's not good that she might not be feeling good, but I'll find her and figure out what's wrong and make her feel better! Thanks guys!" The Scout searched the base for what felt like hours and was just about to give up when he just so happened to run into her as she was being led somewhere by Medic. He smiled gleefully and sparked up the conversation. "Miss Pauling! What brings you here?" She rushed passed him as Medic continued to lead her towards his operating room, for Y/N had apparently woken up. "Not now Scout, I have something important to attend to." Miss Pauling and Medic hurried down the halls as Scout followed, trying to plead his case. "That's fine! I can help you!" Miss Pauling breathed out a breath of air, slightly frustrated at the Scout, as they continued to rush through the base. "Fine, just don't do anything that could scare them." Scout looked confused as they all neared a set of doors. "'Them?' Who're you talkin' about?" Medic opened the doors dramatically as Miss Pauling and Scout entered the room behind him. Scouts' eyes widened at first from shock and then narrowed in recognition as he looked at the child in front of him.
"Hey! You're the kid that stole my wallet!"
