"Mama! Tell me a bedtime story!"

A child giddily jumped on their bed, restless. The mother sighed. "If I do, will you promise me you'll go to sleep?" Their mother approached the child, sitting on the bed besides them. The child jumped into bed, nodding vigorously. "Yes! I promise!" They put up her pinky, signaling for a pinky promise. Their mother giggled and wrapped her pinky around the childs'. "Okay, and let me guess, you want to hear the one about the masked man?" The child's eyes lit up as they grinned, nodding rapidly as they wrapped themself in their favorite blanket. "Yessss! But a new one!" The mother rolled her eyes and raised a brow. "A new one?" The child nodded more, bouncing up and down in their spot as they did so. "Alright then... let me see." The mother looked up, pressing her hand to her chin in thought, trying to think back to another story with her and the masked man. She then perked up as a memory struck her. "Okay, I got it!

"Long ago, in a time and place much different than now, there was a woman. She was a very strong woman. She fought the bad guys, and saved those in need!"

"That's you, mama!"

The mother smiled, giving her daughter an eskimo kiss. "Yes, it is!

"But one day, she got a mission! She had to go to a house and take things from some evil people! She completed the mission as she was told to, but while she was trying to get out of the evil peoples' place, she found a nice lady in purple. And that lady was in trouble, so she had to help her. But because of that, she got in trouble with the bad people. She was able to safely get the lady out, but she was cornered. There were too many bad guys, and she couldn't fight them all off. They were hurting her, and she didn't know how she'd make it out of this one!"

The child gasped dramatically, becoming nervous for the woman in the story.

"There were bad men around, and they got closer, and closer- when all of a sudden a man burst through the door!"

The child smiled and cheered. "The masked man!"

Your mother grinned back. "It was the masked man! He swooped in and saved the day, fighting off all of the bad guys, and saving the woman. He led her away from the bad guys, and it had turned out that he and the lady she had saved knew each other. So they were all able to get away from the bad guys, but they had to hide for a little while because the bad guys were still looking for them. They all found a place to hide way up high in the mountains. When they got there, they realized that I was hurt!"

There was a look of worry on your face. "Oh no! Mama got hurt!"

Your mother gave you a small smile. "But it was okay! Because the masked man and the lady were there to help me. They helped take care of me, and helped me be big and strong again! And when I was strong again, the lady asked if I could work with her and the masked man."

You gleamed up at your mother, curious about whether or not she accepted their offer.

"And I said no."

You looked at your mother with a confused and disappointed expression. "What?! Why nooottt?! You could have been able to hang out with the masked man alllll the time!" Your mother giggled at your childish nature, scooping you up in her arms. "Well, you see, the woman preferred to work alone, and be mysterious. She was her own boss, and she didn't want to have to follow someone else's rules!" Your mother playfully poked at your tummy, tickling you and saying the last part in a silly voice. "The masked man was sad because he liked a lot of things about the woman. But he didn't show it, because he was supposed to be the mysterious masked man." She said the last part in a mockingly dramatic voice, and a look in her eyes made it seem like she was feeling nostalgic after having told the story. You, now curious, looked up at your mother with an innocently curious expression. "Did you and the masked man like each other? Like, like-like each other?" Your mother snorted, and let out a loud laugh. "No, no we didn't. Things would be a lot different if we did. And I would have never met your father if I joined them." Your eyes widened. "Really!? Wow!" Your mother laughed softly. "Yeah- but the masked and I stopped talking to each other awhile ago." You tilted your head slightly as you yawned. "Why?" Your mother smiled as she picked you up and began to tuck you in, a far-off look on her face. "Well, I had you! And we wanted to make sure you and daddy would be safe." You were still confused and wanted to ask more questions, but sleepiness overtook you, so you couldn't help but fall asleep.
