Now, what you would usually be expecting to happen next is a quick chapter about how Demo and Engineer had something important to tell you. But nothing of note ended up happening. They showed you an invention they had worked on together, their knowledge of engineering and chemistry combining to make something they were pretty proud of. It was fun seeing their excitement towards your amazed reaction, but it wasn't anything more than that. They just wanted to see your gleefully awestruck expression.

It could go into detail. Usually, there would be detail. But not this time.

Within the next few weeks around half of the mercenaries got sick. Medic and Engineer found out the base's filter was broken and was the source of many of their ailments. They had been subject to lead poisoning.

After that, supplies sent from MannCo and elsewhere seemed to dwindle. When they asked Pauling about it, she couldn't give them any reasoning as to why.

Then, the cameras stopped working. And their security. So if someone were to break in and try to kill them or steal from them, no one would know. They had to start having the everyone, except you as per usual, switch between night shifts.

Spy was getting more and more anxious, as were you and the rest of the mercenaries. At first, it was easy to convince that the broken filter was just an odd occurrence or even a coincidence. But now, everything was so out of place. Everyone felt on edge and tense, having their defenses and safety stripped away from them and their base.

You were all open, weak, and exposed.

Spy knew who was behind it all. He held meetings, rarely including you in them. He told them to prepare and be on edge, and at the sign of anything that could cause even a hint of suspicion to raise alarm. The mercenaries surprisingly listened and kept open communications in case anything happened. When Spy finally did speak to you about the matter, he simply told you this. "Don't try to pick a fight. Run as fast and as far as 'ou can if you encounter one of them. Run, or hide, or even leave zhe base if you have to. Whatever it is you need to do to survive, do it." Spy's tone was grave, and even if a part of you wanted to at least try and put up a fight, but you could sense Spy's direness towards the situation. So, you just nodded. From then on, you also took it upon yourself to start carrying your pocket knife around with you everywhere you went, just in case.

And then, after all of that worry and preparation, there was nothing. Tensions had risen to a peak, but were slowly dying down. Not enough for things to feel normal again, since supplies were still lacking, and the security systems were still down, but the musk of adrenaline had faded a decent amount.

You wished it hadn't
