(y/c) had run away from home.
they just couldn't take it anymore. no one understood them, and (y/c) knew they could live a better life somewhere else. they'd been warned about running away as a child, especially through the forest. if you made it through the forest, you'd be totally separated from your old life- your old friends, old family, old problems. but that was a very big 'if'.
(y/c) didn't believe the stories, but that didn't stop the townsfolk from telling them. stories of children and young adults running away in the night in attempts to escape school, parents, their problems, only to be lured in by creatures called the fae, and kidnapped, never to be seen again.
it didn't make any sense to (y/c). of course the people from those stories were never seen again- they'd ran away through a forest everybody else was too scared to go through. so (y/c) had no doubt in their mind as they packed a bag, wrote a note and left it on their bed, and left their house for the woods that they would be fine, and that they could prove their neighbors wrong once they got to the other side.
(y/c) eventually made it to the edge of the forest, taking a deep breath before heading in. it wasn't nearly as scary at night as everybody said it was. the moon shone brightly from above, its light breaking through the leaves of the trees above. they could hear owls hooting, and felt the cool breeze of the night on their face.
one thing they didn't expect to hear, though, was humming; seemingly coming from straight ahead. they stopped immediately. who would be in the forest at this hour? as (y/c) continued to walk, they saw that the trees and foliage began to get thicker up ahead, but there was a soft golden glow coming from whatever was beyond the trees- and the humming was louder than ever. it was entrancing, pulling them in- like a siren's song. but (y/c)'s village was far from the sea.
