scenario one
kaede knew it was dangerous to sing. she was fully aware of that. so unlike some of her acquaintances, who thought it was funny to go to the shore and see if they could find anybody to lure in and leave them in a trance, kaede only went when she knew nobody would be around. namely, at the far end, late at night. too late for any couples to be out for a walk along the beach, and too early for anybody to be out for the sunrise. you couldn't take kaede's music away from her, but she'd do her best to make sure she didn't hurt anybody with it. but, unfortunately, she couldn't have predicted (y/c) coming down to the beach so late at night.

(y/c) had been having a lot of difficulty sleeping. figuring that maybe they just needed to clear their head, they quietly left their house, walking down to the shore— which was easy enough, since they lived on the edge of town.
the moon was bright in the sky, and it lit their way, reflecting brightly off of the street and off the water, once they reached the shore. they were planning to walk to the end and back, and then head back home, but it seemed like the universe had other plans. the closer (y/c) got to the far end, they started to hear a girl's voice— was she singing? continuing on her way, and a little more intrigued now, they picked up their pace.
however, once they got close enough to spot her in the moonlight, their steps became slower, and their mind started to become cloudy. nothing else mattered in the moment, other than getting as close to that girl as possible. their body moved on its own, the sounds around them were fuzzy...
" h - hey ! snap out of it ! listen to me , jeez— wake up ! "
in what seemed like only a moment later, the girl was suddenly right in front of them, violently shaking their shoulders. she had long blonde hair, at least falling down to her shoulder blades. she wore a pink bikini top, but that's all (y/c) could see, as practically everything below her top was underwater. coming back to their senses, (y/c) suddenly realized that they were standing in the ocean, the water level well on its way up their chest. wait, how did they get here?

scenario two
it was an exceptionally nice day out— in fact, it was the warmest day (y/c)'s small town had had all year. it was spring and it felt like summer. they'd wanted to go down to the beach for a while now, all through the winter months, and now they would finally get a chance to go in nice weather.
when (y/c) got down to the beach, they noticed that nobody was there yet. that was fair, it was pretty early on in the morning. maybe they should enjoy their time alone here while it lasted.
as they walked along the shore to try and find a nice spot, (y/c) suddenly realized that they weren't, in fact, alone out here. somebody in the distance was lying in the sand. wait, no— half in the sand, half in the water. were they asleep?! wanting to make ensure that they wouldn't drown when the tide rose, (y/c) continued on towards the figure, picking up their pace. but as they approached them, they realized that drowning was the least of this poor figure's worries at the moment.
it was a girl about (y/c)'s age. there were cuts and scrapes all over her body, some just barely piercing the skin and some too deep not to worry about. scratchy rope tightly constricted the girl's torso, and if (y/c) inspected it close enough, it appeared to be a net that she was tangled in. her hair was half-dried from being wet, and she was clearly unconscious, taking shallow breaths. but what (y/c) didn't notice until the tide receded, and exposed the lower half of her body, was her tail. maybe that explained the net better— she was a mermaid.
