My powers seem to be able to keep someone else's power until I heal someone else, which is pretty awesome so I asked Palmer to let me heal her so that I could do her sound wave thing in the gym that drowns out Dane's men, so I can train without her. I told my parents I've been going out with Kai, but this whole week I have been non stop training, every time I think of relaxing I just see Dane showing up and killing everyone I love. That thought sends shivers done my spine and motivates me to keep going. I've never felt this alive and empowered, I can honestly say that if Dane had to show up right now I could handle him. The sound of the door opening makes me stop and tense up.
"Oh it's just you," I sigh in relief.
"You've been at this for 4 days and nights Ave, when was the last time you slept?" Kai asks.
"I don't need sleep, my body rejuvenates itself remember?" I say then carry on butchering the punching bag.
"Avery," he says stopping my hand from hitting the bag.
"I will rest when Dane is dead," I say and then pull my hand out of his grip.
"If that is true then he has already won, look at you. He has made your life rotate around him, is that what you want?" I drop my hand. "I'm not saying don't train, I'm saying that I miss you, everyone does, if you don't make time for yourself and the people who care about you then what exactly are you fighting for?" as much as I hate to admit it, he is absolutely right, I haven't had a conversation with anyone in days.
"You're right. I'm sorry."
"You can make it up to me by letting me take you out for lunch," I smile.
"Deal," he kisses my forehead and we stop by my house so that I can get cleaned up, I insisted, even though Kai said no one will notice the sweat dripping all over my body.
After I shower, I braid my hair into two and put on a pair of blue jeans with a top and a cute jacket accompanied by, of course, sneakers. I make my way downstairs and find my mom talking to Kai.
"Mom? What are you doing home in the middle of the day?"
"Hello to you too sweetie, I just came back for my forms, it feels like I haven't seen you in forever. Tonight we're having dinner, I invited Kai, we need to talk about your birthday coming up." UGHHHHHHHH, I hate celebrating my birthday.
"Don't give me that look, you don't have cancer, we're going big this year. Love you, bye" she says kissing me on the cheek and walking out. When the front door closes Kai looks at me and smiles.
"You've kept a lot of secrets from me but I did not expect your birthday to be one of them."
"I hate celebrating my birthday, Maya and my mom used to get more excited for my birthday than I ever did."
"Well, since Maya and you are ummm...having technical difficulties-"
"... yeah she let my brother plug himself into her that's the technical difficulty," I say with a bit of hate in my voice.
"As I was saying before being rudely interrupted... I have to be extra excited to fill the Maya shaped hole on your birthday."
"No please no. No gifts, no parties, no making a big deal."
"Your mother and I already have big plans for your birthday, I'm sorry."
"Okay whatever, but that's it, no gifts," he doesn't say anything. "Kai promise me no gifts."
"Fine, I promise, can we go eat now," We drive to McDonalds and he goes through the drive thru.
"I thought you wanted to sit inside," I say.
"We'll sit somewhere but not here."
"Kai Grayson," I say in a 'you-better-explain-yourself-right-now' tone.
"Avery Shaw," he says mocking me. "You'll see." Is all I manage to get out of him. We drive back to my house, but we don't stop, he carries on going, we pass Mayas house and we stop by the same spot where I came after Maya and I got into a big fight the night of the dinner. He gets out of the car and so I do too.
"We're having a picnic," he says taking my hand and twirling me around. He then walks to the trunk of the car and pulls out a basket and a blanket. He lays everything down and I carry the mcds and then sit down.
"Why did we buy food if we're having a picnic?" I ask.
"The basket is just for the aesthetic," he reaches in and pulls out a container.
"OMG, is that?"
"...waffles," thee legendary waffles, the first thing Kai ever made for me to eat. "This is dessert," he says putting the waffles back into the basket. I just stare at this staggering human being sitting in front of me, I think of everything he is to me and everything he has done for me...
"I love you," shocked at my own words that just slipped out, do I mean them? Damn right I do. But did I mean to say them ? Definitely not. Kai is clearly taken aback by what I said, so I feel the need to say, "You don't have to say-"
"I love you Avery Shaw. With every cell in my body," without even thinking, I wrap around him and let his soft lips take control of mine.
For one afternoon, there was no Dane, no powers, no problems,
just me and my heart in human form.
