Chapter 55

Kai's pov

After turning into Dane and teleporting to the base, Palmer mind-naps (taking over someones mind) one of the agents in charge, and makes him walk into my room because he would have knowledge and clearance on the prisoner floor. His name is agent Russo, we tie him up and I shift into him. Since I can only teleport to places I know, I had to walk there as agent Russo. This  base is similar to the one in Brazil, they have long corridors with hidden cells. Thanks to Russo's clearance card, I wave the card over a card detector pad and all the cells light up. I shift into Dane and teleport back to the room where Lorenzo and Palmer are, make us three invisible, and then I teleport them to the prisoner level. Side note: Invisible people can see invisible people. I did not know that. 

We each take a corridor, and look for Dane. The prisoners clearly can't see us, the window must look like a mirror or something to them because none of them flinch when we walk past. 

"Found him!" Lorenzo shouts and I rush towards him. 

"Guys, we have a problem..." Palmer says,"...if he can't get out that means the cell has power dampening properties, which means, even if we get in, we won't be able to get out." 

"Let's break him out then," I suggest.

"We will set off alarms," Palmer says. 

"So?  We can teleport out of here and we're invisible. All they will know is that Dane escaped." 

"How do we contain Dane?" Lorenzo asks.

"We don't. See those cuffs on him? They stop Dane from using his powers," Palmer explains. I'm impressed, Salutis really made sure that Dane wouldn't be able to escape. 

"Enzo, use your shock waves to break down the glass." Nope, that nickname is weird, I don't see myself getting used to it any time soon.

In seconds, the glass is shattered and Dane is confused because, well, we're invisible. Palmer puts him to sleep and I teleport us back to my hotel. 

"Are we sure it's the real him?" I have to ask, Dane is lying in the middle of us on the floor just like fake Dane, aka Arlo  was.

"Only one way to find out," Palmer says placing her hands over his head and reading his mind. This time takes longer than all the other times she did this, just as I start to worry, she snaps back into reality. "It's definitely Dane."  

"What'd you see?" 

"A lot."

"Avery?" 

"She's at some farmhouse. I couldn't see where. But I can go back in and-" 

"Where am I?" Sleeping beauty awakens. 

"With your favourite people in the whole wide world," I answer sarcastically. 

"Fools. Salutis will know it was you three who took me. Btw they don't appreciate being robbed," he mocks in a way that almost sounds like a warning. Palmer makes him sleep again and then says, "I hate to admit it but he is right. If they find out it was us they won't just give us detention. I couldn't see why but he is terrified of them."

In a matter of

Dane has two bullets in his chest. 

I look back and see Salutis agents pointing their guns at us, I don't hesitate, I touch Palmer and Lorenzo and teleport us out of there. 

"Nooooooo!" Palmer says falling to her knees, "We were so close." 

"Why would Salutis do that?" 

Uh oh. Sammy. 

I teleport to the base, right into his room, I see him standing and playing with his action figure, as I touch him, an agent bursts through the door, "Don't you move!"

What do you think I did? I moved.

I teleported Sammy to the one place Salutis wouldn't look...Julia Jacksons loft. 

"Hey TJ. Do me a favour, guard Sammy with your life," I say as TJ answers the door. 

"Sure thing. What's up?" he asks while I'm running to the elevator.

"No time to explain. I'll be back," as soon as those doors slide closed, I teleport back to Palmer and Lorenzo. 

"What the hell?" Palmer asks. 

"I had to get Sammy before it was too late." 

"Smart," Lorenzo comments. 

"Kai." 

"Palmer." 

"I'm grateful for you saving our lives and all but where are we?"

This is the first time I'm noticing where we are... we're standing on a road in the middle of two fields. I've never been here before, how is this even possible. 

"I have no idea." 

"How can  you not know? You think of somewhere and that's where you go." I remember now...

"Someone," I correct. 

"What?" 

"I thought of Avery when we teleported. I must have known where she was subconsciously because I was Dane. You said she was in a farmhouse didn't you?"

"Yes I did. Do you see a farmhouse anywhere around you?" she mockingly asks.  

"No but I see farms. It's a start."

"Okay guys, that's great, but we have to move fast. Salutis found us in minutes the first time, I'm betting they can do it again," Lorenzo interrupts. 

"You're right. Let's split up. Text if you find anything." 

We all walk in different directions, if I teleported here without having been here, perhaps I can teleport directly to Avery. I shift into Dane, close my eyes, and try to teleport to her. When nothing happens, I open my eyes and notice I'm still me.  I try again and again to shift into Dane but it doesn't work. I shift into Lorenzo to make sure my powers are working and it works. That's when it hits me... I can't shift into him because there isn't a him to shift into anymore.

Dane is really dead.
