Escape The Dead

Chapter 12- Gina & Nicole

Everyone ate dinner before going to sleep. Gina and Jillian went up to the room first while everyone else cleaned up. Gina went to the bathroom picking up a toothbrush.

"Boy am I glad to see this again," said Gina.

"Your not going to use that, right?" Jillian asked.

"Oh yes I am."

"That's not your toothbrush."

"You think I care? It felt like I haven't brushed my teeth for days after we left my house. I rather have a fresh breath than a stinky one."

"Wait!? Are you implying my breath stinks?" Jillian said with narrow eyes, her voice growing shrill. She spun around and tightened her lip.

"Uhh... No. Your breath smells fine. You have been eating mints and chewing gum after all."

"Whatever."

Jillian went to the sink fill a cup with water to rinse her mouth. Gina squeezed toothpaste on to the toothbrush and started to brush her teeth.

"Jill? Can I ask you a question?" Gina said after rinsing.

"What?" said Jillian rinsing.

"Do you... Like me?"

Jillian spit out the water that was in her mouth out of surprise.

"What kind of question is that?!" Jillian use her sleeve to wipe her mouth.

"No, I mean like, do you hate me. Cause I remembered the argument I had with Nicole and she said that you said I was bossy. So, I was wondering if you hate me for that."

"Gina, I admit, you are bossy and all. But if it weren't for you telling me what to do I would probably be dead right now. Everyone knows that, even Nicole. We just... take you for granted sometimes." Jillian patted the older girl's back.

"I want to apologize. To Nicole, that is. I might have been a bit bossy, and not a good friend."

"I'm sure you'll get the chance."

Gina went back to brushing her teeth and Jillian started rinsing again. Everyone else started coming up. Jillian felt gross that the boys even used someone else's toothbrush, Nicole thought it was gross too. But soon after an argument about clean teeth and a fresh breath, Jillian and Nicole gave in. They grabbed the toothbrush and started brushing. They admit it felt nice to have clean teeth and a fresh breath. Everyone went to bed. Gina closed the lights, the boys slept against the wall and the three girls slept in the bed together with Gina and Nicole at both ends, and Jillian in the middle.

Nicole had trouble sleeping. Coupled for the ghoulish moans that echoed on the air Nicole turning in the bed knowing that there was no way she was going to sleep. She peeled herself out of bed not waking the others, casting a quick glance to the boys before wandering over to the window doors, out on the balcony and staring far in the distance. A part of her held on to the hope that they'd leave Barru town and find civilization just fine. Instead, she got the unceasing ghoulish chorus. The only thing that interrupted it was footsteps behind her. She turned around to see Jillian.

"Trouble sleeping?" Jillian asked as she walked over and leaned onto the railing edge of the balcony beside Nicole.

"Does that noise ever stop?"

"No," Jillian said shaking her head. "That's why we talk."

Nicole didn't respond, choosing to stare out over the desolate remains of the world. That made sense, because this noise was getting to her. How could Gina and Jillian, even the boys have figured out so much more of the new world? They were all only out a day or two longer. They both seemed like strange, other worldly creatures. Gina, Jillian, Jack and even her own twin brother seemed like ephemeral beings who had been living their whole lives in this world that Nicole found herself in.
