Escape The Dead
Chapter 16- Love doesn't Last
Snap... crack... snap... Gina stirred as she heard something moving. She slowly opened her eyes. She must have fallen asleep, though she was suppose to be on lookout. She lifted up her head and Jack fell to her shoulder, still asleep. She smiled seeing how cute Jack was when he's asleep. She heard a branch snap and footsteps closing in. Gina blinked trying to see in the darkness. Another branch snapped and her eyes finally adjusted to the dark.
"Darin?" Gina saw how his brown hair is facing up like a punk dude would. "We'll head out when daylight hits. We could use some more rest." she whispered, trying not to wake him up.
Darin didn't respond, he was moaning. Gina looked at him again squinting her eyes. Darin walked in a weird way, almost as if he was dragging his feet. She glanced down at Jack who is still soundly asleep. She looked back to Darin and he tripped over a rock and fell to the ground. His eyes are blank, he had turned to a zombie. Darin started pulling himself towards them. Gina shook Jack on his shoulder.
"W-what?" he shook himself awake.
"Run!" Gina yelled.
Darin grabbed Gina in the leg and she kicked him away. More zombies came from deep in the woods as they heard Darin groaning. Gina and Jack stood up and started to run away. The zombies came out of no where and went after them.
"In here!" Jack yelled to Gina when he entered the warehouse area near the woods.
Jack didn't get a response so he looked over his shoulder. Gina was still on the edge of the woods while he had reached the gate of the warehouse. She was slicing the zombies with her sword. Jack can hear Gina cursing and yelling, he didn't like the screaming sound. His heart skipped a beat when he saw a zombie grabbed Gina's leg. He thought he saw a zombie bite Gina on her torso but it was too dark to see. Jack shot some zombies with the gun in his hand to help Gina.
"You ok? I heard screaming," said Jack.
"Don't worry, I'm fine," Gina was panting heavily. "We should take shelter in that warehouse, seems like a good hiding place, we can get to the others through here," Gina pointed.
They walked in and the door suddenly closed behind them. Being startled they turned around and someone flashed a beam of light at them.
"Who's there!?" said an unfamiliar voice.
"We were just passing by," said Gina.
"Oh," the person flashed the light on their face.
What stood in their was a boy with blonde hair. Gina and Jack thought it was creepy how he flashed the light under his chin.
"So why are you here? And who are?" Jack asked.
"Sorry about that. My name is Luke, I was on my night shift when those things were all over the news," he said.
"Well I'm Jack and this is my girlfri-" Jack suddenly stopped. "I mean, this is Gina." He smiled.
"It's nice to meet you Lu-"
Gina was interrupted by the groaning and knocking at the door from the zombies.
"How nice, you lead them here. Just great." Luke sighed. "Alright, looks like it's time to leave. Come on, follow me," Luke said.
Luke guided Gina and Jack through the warehouse. They sneaked out the back door being as quiet as possible. Then Gina suddenly started to cough.
"You ok?" asked Jack in a worried voice.
"Don't worry, I'm fine." Gina smiled at Jack.
Jack was worried, noticing that Gina was looking pale. They walked through the woods to a bridge. Jack looked down seeing a river down the cliff.
"That's real steep," said Jack. He turned to Gina who wasn't looking so well. "You sure you're ok, Gina?"
"I'm sorry Jack."
"Why are you sorry?" Jack walked closer as Gina took a step back.
Gina started to cough again and Jack noticed that she was coughing up blood. Gina looked pale and her eyes seem to be tired. The sun started to rise and there it was.
"No! Nonono! No! This can't be happening!" Jack panicked.
On Gina's torso was a bloody bite mark from a zombie. The zombie bite ripped through the bandages that covered her wound to her flesh. Gina panted and tried not to whimper and cry in front of Jack.
"No amputation can save me now. Shoot me Jack, If you don't hurry I'll turn to one of them."
"There's no way in hell that I can shoot you."
"Jack, just do it!"
"No! I can't! No! I won't! I can never shoot the one I love."
"Why Jack? Why did you have to fall in love with me?"
"Because its you. No, it has to be you." Jack cupped his hand on Gina's cheek
"I'm sorry Jack." Gina walked away from Jack's touch onto the edge of the bridge and spread out her arms.
"Gina? What are doing?"
"Trying not to hurt the one I love." Gina began to fall back. "I really do love you, Jack." Gina smiled as a tear fell down her cheek.
"NO!!" Jack ran trying to catch Gina but Luke stopped him.
"What are you doing!?" Jack yelled at Luke.
"Trying to stop you from committing suicide!"
Jack shook himself free and jumped after the older girl. He grabbed Gina's hand and they both were engulfed by the rushing stream.
