For the rest of the evening, everything went smoothly. But Sasuke knew something is still up. He couldn't allow himself to relax until he and Sakura arrived back in Sumida. And Sasuke's hunch was almost never wrong as the perfectly well planned evening that is suppose to go smoothly, just went down the gutter as a certain man stood in front of them.
There were too many people and Sasuke was almost convinced he wouldn't be able to cross paths with him, but there he was, standing proud like he just got here straight out of a masquerade ball.
"Tobi," Sasuke said, greeting the man with a nod of acknowledgement. He couldn't really tell fo certain where Tobi is looking. Whether his eyes are on him or on Sakura or perhaps they were staring right between her chest where Sasuke left his marks. Judging by how the man seem to chuckle humorlessly, Sasuke knew it was the latter.
"I suppose the evening would not be complete had I not seen you. This event is made just for you after all," he said and Sakura instantly decided she has to put her guard up around him.
"The event is very well organised."
Sasuke just wanted to finish this pathetic excuse for a conversation as soon as possible but Tobi shows no sign of going anywhere anytime soon. Instead, he turned towards Sakura who in turn unconsciously moved closer to Sasuke.
"This must be the woman you were talking about, Sasuke," he said, offering his hand and Sakura felt reluctant. The last time Sakura gave her hand to a man, Sasuke was clearly pissed.
Looking up to Sasuke, Sakura noticed the small nod and she slowly lifted her hand. She doesn't know why she even looked way more surprise than necessary. Perhaps because Tobi went out of his way and took out his mask, revealing half of his face as his lips grazed her knuckles for no longer than three seconds before arranging the mask back and straightening up. Just the perfect amount of courtesy to show a taken woman and Sasuke took notice of the display. He doesn't like Tobi but Sasuke wished the men would behave like him around Sakura.
"I heard a few things about you from Sasuke. But clearly, you're lovelier than I would have ever imagined."
Actually, take that back, Sasuke felt a prick of annoyance when he heard juts how he's smooth talking his way to Sakura and he absolutely doesn't like it.
Sakura lifted her hand and unconsciously tucked some strands of her hair behind her ears. That was when Tobi noticed the ring around her finger.
"Is that the famous ring that is passed down from generations to the Head of the Uchiha clan?"
Sakura never heard about it, she thought the ring was majestic, an ethereal beauty surrounding the small piece of jewelry. But Sakura would have never thought that it was something this important.
"Is it, Sasuke-kun?" Sakura asked, looking up to Sasuke only to notice how his jaw clenched as he glared at Tobi. He looks way annoyed for some reason.
That was because Sasuke was planning to tell Sakura that later and Tobi just had to ruin it for him. On top of that, Sasuke felt a different kind of being wary around him.
"How do you know that, Tobi?" Sasuke asked, not bothering to mask his annoyance.
The man just shrugged his shoulders before he did something that surprised even Sasuke.
