36 - Plan Gone Wrong

Y/n's POV

Nuffink motioned for us to approach the dragons, so everyone except for Lloyd, Adrien, Kai, and me (only four pairs of people could go at once) did as he asked. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Entrapta petting Windwalker--Nuffink's dragon--and taking a lot of notes. I gently took her hand and pulled her away from the animal.

"Hey! I was just about to measure the wingspan!" she complained.

"They're preparing to go into flight," I explained. "They need some space."

"Ohhh, okay... But then can I measure their wingspans??"

"Maybe," I said with a laugh as I watched the four dragons head off into the distance. I blinked, and then the next thing I knew, they were gone.

Entrapta squealed in excitement. "That. Was. Amazing!"

"Yeah, it was pretty cool," Adrien agreed.

I turned to him. "Hey, how'd it go with Mari? I saw you talking to her."

He looked at the ground. "I don't think she likes me very much."

"What do you mean?" I asked, very confused. We are talking about the same Marinette, aren't we? The one who can't get a sentence out around her crush?

"She said she likes Luka. And honestly, that makes sense. I never made a move on her, and now I'm too late."

"It's never too late," Lloyd said. "Do you love her?"

Adrien sighed. "I don't know."

"I don't understand," I said. "You've been in love with Ladybug for ages."

"I know, but... Mari said that her and Ladybug aren't the same person. I know that we become superheroes by fusing with our kwamis, but I didn't think that it would change our personalities that much... but apparently, it does."

I put a hand on his shoulder, and was about to tell him not to worry about it, but the sound of flapping wings got my attention before I could open my mouth. I turned to the noise, and saw Zephyr and Nuffink returning.

"That was fast," Lloyd said as they landed. "Did you get them to Earth already?"

"Yep," Zephyr said, hoping off her dragon to ajust something on the saddle. "Our parents headed back to the Hidden World, since we don't need their help to bring the rest of you home."

"Great," Kai said impatiently. "Now let's get outta this desert."

Suddenly, a deafening screech blasted through the wide open space. I gasped as a huge creature burst from the dry ground, and came running towards us. Kai pulled out his sword, while Lloyd summoned some of his elemental energy. I didn't have a weapon with me, so I quickly picked up a stone from beside the oasis in case I needed something to throw.

"Windwalker, up!" Nuffink ordered his dragon, and the two of them went up into the air. Zephyr tried to hop back onto her own dragon, but the beast got spooked by the strange creature and flew away without her rider.

"No, Typhoon, come back!" she cried, but the dragon didn't listen. As we watched Typoon fly into the horizon, Zephyr turned to her brother. "Nuffink, go back home and find Mom and Dad!"

"I'll be back as soon as I can!" he replied, and he headed into the sky to shift over to another realm.

"Edit to log; we are now being chased by a giant arthropod," Entrapta said into her voice recorder.

"Entrapta, let's go!" I ordered. When she didn't listen, I grabbed her arm, and dragged her along with me as we ran for our lives.

"What is that thing?!" Kai demanded.

"Does it matter?!" I called back. "Less talking, more moving!"

After about five more minutes, Zephyr and Entrapta looked like they couldn't run any further. I realized that they weren't as in shape as the other four of us, so I started racking my brain for another way to stay out of the creature's grasp.

"I have an idea!" I announced. I skidded to a stop, turned around, then headed straight for the giant bug.

"What are you doing?!" Adrien exclaimed.

"Just trust me!" I called over my shoulder.

With adrenaline pumping thorugh my veins, I sprinted towards the giantic arthropod. As I got closer, the bug slowed down slightly, and I took his hesitation as my opportunity. I threw myself at the horns near its mouth, and just managed to wrap my arms around the bony structure. I swung my legs to gain momentum, pulled myself up onto the horn, then climbed onto the creature's back.

"Kai!" I shouted.

He reacted immediately, and threw his blade to me. I reached upwards, and caught the weapon by the handle, then I drove the blade into the bug's skull. I thought it would stop running towards my friends, but it didn't even slow its pace. All it did was thrash its head around, making it difficult for me to stay on his neck.

"Look out!" I yelled.

As the creature got closer to them, Kai and Lloyd did the same thing I did and got themselves up next to me. I wasn't sure how this was even possible, but Entrapta used her hair to lift herself up onto the back of the arthropod, bringing Zephyr and Adrien along with her. I made a mental note to ask her about that later--it was like her hair had a mind of its own!

"Now what?" Adrien asked.

"Let me drive!" Kai said, shoving me over and grasping the sword. As he moved the handle, he was able to change the direction the giant bug was facing.

"Don't hurt it!" Zephyr whined.

"It's a little late for that," Kai shot back. "Hang tight--I'm gonna steer it towards those trees over there."
