BEN MAYBERRY POV
"She just got out of her room," Madeline spoke into a walkie-talky from upstairs where she scouted Lizz's room.
"Okay. What is she wearing?" I asked from my hiding spot downstairs.
"Her colorful footie pajamas. Rolled down to the waist. White cross country skiing t-shirt."
"Copy that."
"I knew this would turn into one of your little mission impossible fantasies," my wife giggled.
"Rodger."
"Please stop, Ben."
"10-4."
"I'm hanging up now."
"Ma'am, you can't hang up a walkie-talky. Over."
"Unbelieveable," she muttered before holding her talk button down so I couldn't speak to her anymore. Smart.
I looked at the entry website one more time. It was a contest to make a music video for the song Stay Stay Stay. And Lizz was unwittingly going to be entered in it. And we. Were. Going. To. Win. I had set up a camera in the kitchen because to film and I was ready to hit play. Her iPod can be controlled from any room in the house and the speakers go all through the house. She didn't even know Mads and I were home. I snickered. And to top it all of, Maddie and I brought our two dogs with us from Maine. They were two German Shorthair rescue dogs named Bruce and Clara. Bruce was currently humping my leg. I shook him off and gently pushed him into the kitchen where Lizz was making her breakfast with Clara following her every move. I watched my laptop screen where it showed what the video was recording.
The song Daylight by Matt and Kim ended. Here goes. I selected Stay Stay Stay and watched the laptop screen as Lizz smiled absentmindedly at the song as she got out the ingredients to make cake. She switched between baking and eating her cereal and I rolled my eyes again. Maddie came and casually ran and slid on the hardwood floors to sit next to me. I put my arm around her shoulder as we watched.
"I'm pretty sure we almost broke up last night. I threw my phone across the room at you." Lizz dramatically actioned to the words, picking up her freaking flip phone and then pointing at Bruce. "I was expecting some dramatic turn away, but you stayed." She grinned at the dogs. "This morning I said we should talk about it. Cause I read you should never leave a fight unresolved." She mouthed knowingly and motioned with her hands. I shook my head. "That's when you came in wearing a football helmet and said okay let's talk." She pretended to put a helmet on her head.
"And I said stay stay stay. I've been loving you for quite some time time time. You think that its funny when I'm mad mad mad. But I think that its best if we both stay." She danced around the kitchen with her chocolate batter covered spatula, spinning and jumping with the dogs following her.
"Before you I'd only dated self-indulgent takers, who took all their problems out on me. But you carry my groceries and now I'm always laughing." I snickered as she pretended to swoon over Bruce and Clara. "I love you because you have given me no choice but to stay." She laid back on the counter and did odd arm and leg motions to the chorus, occasionally taking a bite of cereal or licking some chocolate off her spatula.
She put the baking utensil down and sat on the ground as she mouthed the words at the dogs that rushed to her to be pet. "You took the time to memorize me, my fears, my hopes, and dreams. I just like hanging out with you all the time. All those times that you didn't leave, it's been occurring to me, I'd like to hang out with you, for my whole life."
