Saturday (still)
LIZZ MAYBERRY POV
We got home around 1:45 pm. I realized I hadn't been to the gym in a while and should go. I voiced this thought. "Harry, do you want to come to the Y with me?"
"The Y?"
"Yeah, the YMCA it's like a huge gym with weights, basketball, swimming, raquetball and a bunch of other things to do. I'm just going for about an hour to shoot some baskets."
"Sure! I'll come," Harry agreed.
"Okay. Leave in 15 minutes? Change into workout clothes and meet me back here," I told him. He agreed again and left my house. I went to find Theo. "Theo," I called, "Oh! There you are! Guess what? I have a new best friend. His name is Harry. You've met him. Awe. I'll still love you most," I cooed as he rubbed his head on my hand. I scratched his neck one more time before I headed to my bedroom to change.
I pulled on a blue sports bra and a basketball cut off t-shirt. I stepped into a pair of compression shorts and then a pair of basketball shorts on top of that. I also put on my basketball socks. I pulled my hair into a tight but messy bun on top of my head. I put on a cloth headband and looked in the mirror. I looked hard-core. I laughed at myself. This should be interesting. I wondered if Harry even liked basketball.
Harry came walked back into my house as I was sitting on the counter eating a granola bar.
"Yum," he stated, taking the bar out of my hand and biting some off before returning the bar to my waiting hand. I frowned down at it, then up at him and him on the chest.
"Come on, let's go." And with that, we headed out towards my jeep and I drove to the YMCA. We walked in and I was thankful it wasn't busy. I led him to the huge gym that was split off into quadrants by large red curtains of thick cloth material that hung from the ceiling.
We set our bags down to the side of a quadrant in the corner farthest away from the door. We were the only ones in this area but I could hear the familiar squeaks of basketball shoes on hard wood floors from the quadrants around us. I put on my two ankle braces and my huge, clunky knee brace on my left knee. Then we both put on our shoes.
"What happened to your leg?" Harry asked.
"I don't want to talk about it," I answered moodily.
We decided that first, we would shoot around individually at the 3 baskets in the quadrant, then come together to play a little one-on-one. I would sneak peeks at Harry every once in a while. He seemed pretty good. But I was better. I think. and hope. and pray.
"Are you ready for this?" I asked him.
"Bring it on," he replied, smirking.
I called a nice man over from the quadrant next to us to throw the tip. I love tipping. It's exhilarating. Harry and I jumped up. But I was taller and a higher jumper. I swung my hand at the ball and pushed up over his head. I sprinted after it, and before Harry knew it, I went for a lay-up and had scored. I turned around, grinning. He looked scared, "What have I gotten myself into?" He mumbled as he took the ball from me and I headed across the court to play defense. We went back and forth like this for about a half an hour. We didn't keep score, but I'm sure I'd won at least by a little bit.
"Had enough?" I asked, smirking.
Harry scoffed and started shaking his head but stopped and nodded. "Yes."
"Let's go home then."
We got home around 3 pm. We chose to just talk in the family room until it was an acceptable time to eat dinner.
