Last school year: April
Hoseok continued to sit next to Yoongi for the rest of the week. They never said much more than 'hello' to each other, but for some odd reason, he was comfortable. He just hoped Yoongi didn't mind. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking, and Hoseok didn't even bother trying to talk over the loud music playing in his airpods.
The more Hoseok sat next to him, the more he realized Yoongi was kind of strange. He flipped his hair a lot, almost as if it was some kind of habit, and he was always nodding his head along with whatever he was listening to. So far the only things Hoseok knew about him were that he really liked wearing black, and he really liked blasting hardcore rap music into his ears. Hoseok decided right at that moment that he was going to learn more about him, otherwise he was afraid they might be stuck sitting together in silence like this for the rest of the year.
He started by taking one of Yoongi's airpods out, which automatically stopped the music. Yoongi turned and looked over at him as if he suddenly just realized Hoseok had been sitting next to him the entire time.
"What are you doing?" Yoongi said, a look of panic on his face. He was reaching for the airpod in Hoseok's hand, but he wouldn't give it back to him. "You can't just take people's stuff-"
"Let's talk," Hoseok said, placing the airpod in his pocket. He felt bad after he saw the look on Yoongi's face; he hadn't known someone could be so attached to their headphones.
"I don't wanna talk," Yoongi said, his eyes still focused on the airpod in Hoseok's pocket. "I don't like talking." He crossed his arms over his chest, almost like a little kid.
"Really?" Hoseok said, his eyes growing wider. How could someone not like talking? That was the most ridiculous thing he'd ever heard. "You don't talk to anyone at all? Not even Namjoon?"
"I mean I guess I talk to Namjoon, but recently he's been hanging out with other people," he said, shrugging his shoulders. He acted like he didn't care, but Hoseok could tell it probably really upset him. It was hard to read his face when Yoongi never made eye contact with him; instead, he always stared straight ahead.
"But isn't he upset that you're not over there sitting with him? His friends are really nice people, so I'm sure they won't mind you joining them and getting to know you-"
"If they're so nice, why don't you get up right now and go over there instead of sitting here next to me?"
Yoongi looked at him, waiting for a response, but Hoseok didn't have one. All he could do was sit with his head down while he tried to think of something to say. He was now reminded once again of the fact that he still hadn't spoken a single word to Jin, and he was starting to worry that maybe they weren't ever going to speak again. But they were still friends, weren't they? He figured they just needed time to get over their break up.
"Exactly," Yoongi said, smirking at Hoseok's silence. "Can I have my airpod back now?" He reached out his hand.
"Wait," Hoseok said, lifting his head back up quickly, "let's talk about something else. Anything else." He was clearly desperate to find something to distract himself from his thoughts about Jin, and Yoongi seemed a bit startled. "What kind of music do you like?"
"Everything," Yoongi said, responding almost too quickly. Had Hoseok finally asked the right question? Yoongi seemed to like this topic a lot. "But I mostly listen to rap. You might not believe this since he's so smart and cool and everything, but me and Namjoon like to rap together sometimes."
"You rap?!" Hoseok exclaimed almost a bit too loudly. Yoongi was taken aback by his response, but he was smiling. "And Namjoon? He really raps too?"
"Yes," Yoongi said, a slight laugh following. "It's kind of our thing that we do together."
Hoseok was trying to imagine Yoongi, the quietest person he'd ever met, rapping with the future class president of their school. He honestly couldn't picture it, but the idea of it was still amazing. He would have to see it for himself someday.
"Are you trying to picture me rapping?" Yoongi asked, laughing at Hoseok who had gone completely silent out of shock. "Is it really that weird?"
"No," Hoseok said, finally coming out of his thoughts, "I guess you're just a lot less quiet than I thought you were."
Yoongi placed his hands over his heart, a look of false hurt on his face. "You think I'm quiet?" he gasped, staring at Hoseok like he was in pain.
"Thought. I guess I was wrong, though," Hoseok shrugged his shoulders, smiling to himself. Now he knew something about Yoongi that wasn't already completely obvious. "But it's not like being quiet is a bad thing either, y'know," he added.
"Well I think you're obnoxious," Yoongi started, "but I don't think I'm wrong about it. I think you're really, actually just obnoxious."
Okay, now Hoseok was actually hurt. He knew he talked a lot, and it was probably weird of him to keep sitting next to Yoongi when he hardly knew him, but obnoxious? He didn't think he was that bad, and he didn't know Yoongi could be so brutally honest either.
"So I guess you'll have to prove me otherwise," Yoongi said, seeing the look on Hoseok's face. Hoseok looked up and found Yoongi smiling. Had he just been messing with him? What a jerk.
"I guess you're right," he said, and then the two went silent for a moment. Hoseok looked over to see if Yoongi was going to say anything, but he was just staring straight ahead like usual. Hoseok took a deep breath. "After school," he said quietly.
"What?" Yoongi said, looking confused. Hoseok had even confused himself. What did he think he was doing all of a sudden?
"Let's hang out," he said, still not sure what he was getting himself into. Yoongi let out a laugh, which Hoseok had expected.
"Why should I hang out with you?" Yoongi asked, like the idea was completely absurd. "I mean this thing that we do during lunch is nice and all, but I don't remember agreeing to hang out after hours."
Hoseok nodded his head like he understood, but for some reason, he wasn't done trying to convince Yoongi.
"Aren't you lonely anyways?" he asked. Yoongi just glared at him for a moment, then shook his head.
"No," he replied. "Not in the slightest. Are you?"
Hoseok didn't reply, but he knew Yoongi was going to take his silence as a yes. Hoseok wasn't exactly sure what lonliness felt like, but whatever he'd been feeling the past few days felt completely empty. He knew one thing for sure- he missed his best friend, and right now he wasn't even sure if Jin still wanted to be friends.
"So what do you wanna do?" Yoongi sighed. Hoseok hadn't realized Yoongi had been staring at him the entire time.
"Huh?" he said, startled by the question. Did this actually mean Yoongi was agreeing? Hoseok hadn't expected this at all.
"I'll hang out with you as long as you promise to make it fun. And I'm only doing this because Namjoon seems to like you. Otherwise you wouldn't even be sitting next to me right now."
Hoseok breathed a sigh of relief. So Yoongi did actually like him, even if his way of admitting it was a little messed up. Suddenly, he felt a rush of happiness run through him.
"Good," he said, an excited smile on his face. Yoongi looked back at him like he was nervous now.
Hoseok had been too nervous to notice it at first, but he realized then that he'd managed to make Yoongi smile more than once in the last hour. He hated to admit it, but he was still just as adorable as the first day he'd met him.
A/N:
Hello! I hope you don't mind that I've changed the name of the series! I was never really a fan of the whole "Ugly Truth" title, and I think this one suits the storyline a little better! :)
