taehyun feels heavy, as if his presence is big and annoying to the other students. he trudges anxiously through the crowded hallway. mentally scolding himself for being forgetful.

he is supposed to be studying with huening kai during their lunch break. but instead he's fetching his forgotten shoes from the locker rooms. he mentally scolds himself for making such an avoidable mistake.

the gymnasium is dimly lit, because the long curtains are drawn. it sends an eery feeling down taehyun's spine, so he hurries down to the locker rooms to hunt down his shoes. his oxford shoes clack against the steps as he scurries down the stairs.

taehyun sighs happily as he sees the trainers in the corner of the locker room, eager to get back outside to study with huening kai. then he won't be alone with his thoughts at least.

"let's go, taehyun." he quietly cheers himself on as he exits the changing room and makes his way up the dreaful stairs.

the wind is blowing up a storm outside and it makes taehyun a bit scared. the trees dance in the wind and cast monster-looking shadows on the gymnasium floor. when taehyun notices he jumps back, letting out a loud yelp before toppling to the ground.

he lets out a painful grunt, before he jumps again, because the gymnasium door whines loudly as it opens. someone gets pushed inside the large room before the door slams shut. taehyun can't really see them in the dark, but hears the slamming and knocking they do on the closed door.

"let me out! let me out! this isn't funny!" he screams and taehyun bites his lip. even though taehyun doesn't really like him that much at the moment, he still hates that someone is bullying beomgyu.

the ones on the outside locks the door and turns the lights off and on to scare them. it makes beomgyu scream out in fear and taehyun feels really sad. the older assumes he's alone and lets out a loud cry.

"open the door!" he screams, slamming his fist against the large, blue door.

taehyun listens as he wails loudly

"hyung, what's happening? are you okay?" taehyun asks and beomgyu scaredly turns around. he yelps loudly, wiping his tears.

"hyun! you scared the shit out of me!" beomgyu wails, hurrying over to him, "i'm scared!"

"why?"

"we have to be quiet." beomgyu says, crouching down next to taehyun on the floor. carefully placing his hand over the younger's mouth.

"she won't find us if we're quiet."

"who?-" taehyun tries, but beomgyu is quick to shush him.

"she won't find us if we're quiet. don't worry, she won't be angry with us."

taehyun is worried beyond imagining. why is beomgyu suddenly saying things like this?

the older continues to cry quietly. but then it turns into heavy breathing and hiccuping, which concerns taehyun. he instinctively wraps his arms around the older. remembering the last time beomgyu had acted weirdly like this.

he clearly remembers soobin rubbing beomgyu's back in the locker rooms a few months ago and does the same now. beomgyu mumbles things under his breath in between hiccups, taehyun tries his best to listen to what he's muttering.

"it's fine. beomgyu, you're fine, she won't come."

"you're the perfect size for a beomgyu. jaehyun thinks so too. you're okay."

"you're the perfect size for a beomgyu." taehyun repeats after him, still unsure of the situation. he goes along with it anyway, he's willing to do anything to make beomgyu feel safe.

"you're okay, beomgyu. hyun is here." taehyun whispers and notices how easily beomgyu calms down as he repeats those words.

"stay with me, please." beomgyu whispers, "please don't go, even though you hate me."

"i don't hate you."

"please, stay with me. don't go."

taehyun feels important and needed as those words escape beomgyu's mouth. to him, those are the happiest words in the world. well, except for 'i love you'. and he doubts beomgyu will ever tell him that sentence.

"i promise i won't. i'll stay until someone finds us in here." taehyun smiles, running a hand through beomgyu's hair.

"she can't find us."

"no, no. she won't, but i bet hyuka is looking for me right now. he'll come in a minute or two. i promise, beommie."

beomgyu's grip tightens around taehyun as the monsters dance across the floor. the gymnasium turns into a ballroom for the lonely shadows. taehyun hums a quiet melody

"imagine all the different dancers that are in here right now." he whispers, before explaining the shadows ballroom to beomgyu. who thinks the idea is comforting and funny.

they chat quietly to each other about what kinds of monsters they see across the floor. beomgyu notices a rabbit and laughs out loud as taehyun bets it's name is soobin.

it makes taehyun's heart skip a beat. he can't hate beomgyu, not when he acts like a kid, laughing his ass off in taehyun's arms. it's scientifically impossible.

but then the lights flicker on and taehyun hurriedly removes his arms from beomgyu. the door opens,ryujin's head pops inside.

"taehyun? are you coming? huening kai has been nagging non-stop about how slow you are."

"i'm coming." taehyun chirps, brushing off his knees as he stands up. he sends beomgyu a look, the other's hair is disheveled and his cheeks are tear-stained.

beomgyu looks up at him with worried puppy eyes and taehyun feels a jab in his chest. how could he hate beomgyu? how could he hate such a scared little kid?

"beomgyu? are you alright?" ryujin asks as she notices the other on the floor, clutching taehyun's pair of trainers.

"no, could you please walk me to the nurses office?" beomgyu asks and she's hurries inside to help him. taehyun pulls him up onto his feet.

taehyun hates seeing beomgyu scared. he wonders who the woman who has frightened him like this is. and how he's going to kill her for making beomgyu such an anxious mess.

"my knees hurt so bad, i think i have to go home." beomgyu lies through his teeth and taehyun's heart clenches.

he must've lied a lot for it to come so naturally.
