"Are you sure, darling? I can file for leave so I can be with you in the Philippines."
I chuckled at my father's persistence. Hindi naman kailangan, pero sobra siyang mag-alala. The Philippines is my home. It's not like I'll get lost or something.
"It's fine, Dad. Mommy's there, I'll be okay," I assured him.
He let out a heavy sigh, which made me smile. I won!
"Just be careful, okay? One call and I'll be right there if anything happens." He kissed me on the cheek as I grabbed my luggage from the compartment.
"I'm going now, Dad," I said, and he gave me a sad smile. Tears welled up in my eyes. Over the past year, my dad had been my rock. He's the best listener—never complains even when I repeat the same stories. He helped me heal, and I owe him for my new life.
One last glance at my father, and I finally entered the airport. I smiled as I felt the wind brush against my skin. I'm going to fix my life, whatever it takes.
"Eli!" Mommy shouted the moment she saw me stepping out of the airport.
My smile widened when I saw Yumi and Manang with her. I took off my sunglasses and quickened my pace. God, this is home.
"Hi!" I exclaimed when I was finally near them.
Mom immediately hugged me with so much joy. I missed them! It had been months.
"How was the flight, baby?" she asked as she took my luggage to load into the car.
"Good but tiring," I replied with a weak voice.
Yumi sat beside me once we got inside the car. Mom drove with Manang in the passenger seat.I pouted as Yumi remained glued to her gadgets.
"What's that?" I asked, noticing the video of girls dancing on her screen.
The music sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it.
Yumi pouted and removed her earphones. "It's a girl group, Ate. You know, Korean idols? K-pop?"
Of course, I'd heard of K-pop, always trending on social media. I didn't know Yumi was such a fan, though.
I found myself watching the video too. The music was pretty catchy.
"They're pretty," I whispered.
Yumi smiled and nodded. "Yes, they are."
"Adorable," I muttered as I watched her mimic the dance moves with her hands.
After a 30-minute drive, we finally arrived home. I automatically closed my eyes, savoring the breeze. It's so nice to be home. But there was a strange emptiness. They're not here..
