Hope's POV
After Josie told me that Lizzie might be in trouble I got worried. Lizzie and I might hate each other but she's Josie's sister. We talk to Dorian and tell him that something might be wrong and that we need to leave but he doesn't let us go.
"I'm sorry, I can't let you leave."
"No, I need to go home to see my sister." Josie insisted. She's really worried. Dorian sighs as he attempts to reassure us that the matter is being handled.
"Your dad's with your sister, and I'm under strict orders to keep you here." he states.Josie scoffs as though she thinks Dorian is being ridiculous. "What? Why?" she asks. I narrow my eyes as I notice the book Dorian is reading, which appears to be in Gaulish - I think it's Gaulish - and has multiple illustrations of various gargoyles.
"And why are you researching that?" I ask. Dorian slams the book closed before we can get a better look and sighs once again as we stare at him expectantly. After a few minutes of convincing, he finally agrees to let us go, and he gave me a book to give to Dr. Saltzman.Night has fallen, and Josie and I have just returned to the school. We found that the school has a barrier spell, Josie had to take it down to get un. We're immediately unnerved by how empty the ground floor is. "Lizzie?" Josie says.
Realizing that there isn't anyone nearby, I decided that it would be best if we split up. "I'll check the library." I tell Josie.
I take the right-hand hall and begin walking down it, leaving Josie to walk further down the entrance hall.
I just passed Dr. Saltzman's office when I suddenly hear his voice behind me."What are you doing here?" He asks.
I was startled, as I wasn't expecting Dr. Saltzman to pop up on me, and I turn to face him. "Oh, my God. You scared me!" I exclaimed. He is not happy.
"Dorian was supposed to keep you away." he says.
"He tried. He lost. But here-" I hold out a small, thin, and old book. The book is titled Medieval French Folklore.
"Killing Gargoyles 101. He thought you could translate it." Dr. Saltzman groans when he realizes that the book isn't in English. "Gaulish. Son of a-""So, are we on our own, or did the Gauls provide clear instructions?" I ask. He takes a deep breath closes the book.
"In a nutshell, it says Hit hard. Repeat as needed." he explains. We are startled when we hear the stomping footsteps and shriek of the gargoyle, and I look at Dr. Saltzman with wide eyes. "Is that...?" I ask. The thumping steps of the gargoyle cause the overhead lights in the hallway swing around, and Dr. Saltzman tries to quickly recap what has happened before they go to defeat the creature. "Yeah. Listen, it poisoned Lizzie-- I'm guessing to get my attention. Then it attacked me and took the knife.""The knife? The dragon knife? And you're still breathing?"I ask
"Oh, I have a theory about that--"
"Well, save it, because we had to take down that containment spell to get inside the school, meaning our monster can get out." I say.
"A containment spell?" He thinks for a moment before he realizes something.
"Lizzie wanted to make sure whatever attacked her didn't escape into the world. Good girl." He smiles proudly.
Dr. Saltzman starts to formulate a plan and walks over to the corner where a large steel ax is mounted on the wall."All right. Well, I guess we better find it before it makes the evening news." he states. He looks at Hope curiously.
"So, how'd you take the containment spell down?" he asks. Before I can answer, Josie's voice calls out from behind him. "She didn't." she says
Dr. Saltzman turns and looks at Josie in surprise that she siphoned the spell.
"I did." she continued. Josie yanks the ax out of Dr. Saltzman's hands as she gives him a serious look.
"And I have questions." Josie adds.Josie's POV
Me, dad, and Hope are walking with purpose down the main hallway in search of the gargoyle. I am still holding the ax I took from dad for protection, and dad has since found his own weapon, which he has clutched in his right hand. When we arrive at the grand hall dad starts calling for Emma Tig.
"Emma? Emma?" The backroom is empty, until dad, Hope, and I open the sliding doors to the front room to find them there. However, before any of them can say anything, Emma raises her index finger to her lips to shush us.
