Chapter 22: The Death of Colonel Zarpedon

Y/N POV

I accompanied the Vault Hunters and Jack into some kind of mechanical catacombs of sorts which would supposedly lead us to the Eye of Helios. While we did this Jack was speaking "The laser core awaits, let's get goin'."

We ran through several narrow tunnels until we landed in  front of an electrified route. Going through would mean certain death. Luckily Jack was here to explain to us. "Yeah, uh, we're gonna have to go through here. It's an electrical convergence- it doesn't matter. Just wait for the laser to fire before you run through. It'll momentarily drain the power and stop all the electricity. Wait for it."

As if on cue, we heard the familiar sound of the laser charging up and when it fired, sure enough, the electricity field shut off.  Jack exclaimed "Now, go!" We used this brief window to run through and once all of us got through the electricity started again as the laser stopped.

Jack caught his breath as he explained that he wished they didn't need the electricity field but it was essential for the laser to function. Jack went over to the door nearby and tried to open it but the controls sparked as Jack got angered "Son of a- of course it's locked from the other side THANKS ZARPEDON! We're gonna have to go the long way around, let's hit elevator and go topside."

All eight of us got into the elevator as it ascended. Once we came out we found ourselves on a platform. As soon as I saw it I got a bad feeling, and it turns out I was right because suddenly a giant aircraft emerged from over the edge. 

Several Lost Legion Marines appeared as the Aircraft dropped a Dahl PowerSuit down in front of us. This one was much more advanced than the rest so if my assumptions were correct, this was Colonel Zarpedon in person!

The suit fired a giant electrical ball at us but we got out of the way. My suspicions were confirmed when Jack ordered "I'll take care of the troops, you take out Zarpedon's PowerSuit!" We then heard Zarpedon's voice coming from the suit yelling "Too scared to face me yourself Jack?!"

With that our battle against Zarpedon and the Lost Legion began. Just like Jack instructed the seven of us all focused our fire on Zarpedon's PowerSuit as she shot back at us using energy blasts from the arm cannons on her suit.

Luckily due to our numbers, we still were able to keep her at bay, Aurelia shot out her ice spike and did some additional ice damage while Wilhelm deployed his drones, other Jack deployed his hologram body doubles, Nisha aimed for the suit's weak point, Athena got out her shield, I deployed my Scorpio and Claptrap did, something? I'm not too sure what he was doing.

Once her soldiers were gone however, Jack also focused on her and from there it was easy completely disabling her PowerSuit. It fell to the ground and caught fire while Jack celebrated our victory.

However we didn't have too long to celebrate as we heard thumping coming from inside the suit and Zarpedon's grunts accompanying them. Jack angrily exclaimed "Oh COME ON! She's still alive?!"

Suddenly the door to her suit and we saw her leap into the air. Upon landing she looked up and revealed her purple, glowing eyes with matching cracks streaking across her face. She stood up and spun her staff, which seemed to be of Eridian make, aggressively as she approached.

I'm telling you this Zarpedon was acrobatic as Hell! She was flipping about, creating purple shockwaves from her staff which was causing major problems for us. However she was much less durable than she was in her PowerSuit, understandably so it didn't take us too long before she was down. Before we could kill her though, Jack stopped us.

"Hold your fire! I'm not done with her yet." He approached Zarpedon who was on the ground as she seethed at him "It doesn't matter what happens today. Your fall is coming!" Jack wasn't interested as he just asked "Yeah, yeah cool. Where's the Vault?" 

Zarpedon responded weakly as she was dripping purple blood. "Hidden beneath a tangle of chemical filth! I've seen what lies inside it. You can't-" She was cut off by Jack asking in a shocked manner "Wait, wait, wait. You've seen inside it? The Vault's open?" 

Zarpedon tried to reason with him "You must turn back. The power within the Vault will trigger a chain of events that-" Again she was cut off when Jack just said "Bored." And shot her right in the head, finally killing her for good.

As Zarpedon's body lay lifeless on the ground, Jack walked past us saying "So the Vault's already open huh? Cool! Now let's deal with that Laser core." The others all turned to follow him, some of them surprised at how quick he was to kill Zarpedon.

I on the the other hand, stopped for a second. I turned around and looked at Zarpedon's corpse for a moment. It was the eyes you see. Something about them felt very off to me. I heard Jack asking "Y/N! You coming?!"

I nodded and followed them all, two thoughts remained on my mind. What happened to her to make her eyes like that? And I hope it didn't happen to me!
