When a neighbor called to say she would not be able to watch Harry for the day, Dudley began to cry, as he was upset that Harry would have to be brought along on Dudley's birthday trip to the zoo.
At the zoo, the Dursleys spoil Dudley and his friend Piers and neglected Harry as usual.
In the reptile house, Harry paid close attention to a boa constrictor. Suddenly a girl about his age walked up to the scene with a curious expression.
"What are you doing?", the girl asked.
"Uh, n-nothing. Just um. Admiring the glass", Harry replied.
"No. You were talking to it. I won't tell anyone. Besides I can talk to them too."
"You can??"
"Yes. You're not alone in your shock. My uncle shares your same concern."
"I see. Where is your uncle anyway?"
"You see him over there?", the girl asked as she pointed over to the far side at a middle-aged, chestnut-brown-haired man. "That's him. He's been taking care of me for as long as I can remember. I don't know what happened to my parents, but I think it was something awful though."
"That's terrible! Well, I'm sorry to hear about that. I lost my parents as well....."
"Oh...well that's too bad....I'm sorry..." the red-head trailed off.
"Anyways, I'm Harry." The brunette spoke as he held out his hand for the girl to shake.
She smiled while shaking his hand, "I'm Rose. And I'm sorry about your parents too."
"So, you can talk to snakes too?" Harry asked.
"Yeah, I can. And I bet this one's been listening to us the whole time."
Rose said whilst pointing at the giant boa constrictor in front of them.
*That.......I.........have........*. A very strange voice, almost a whisper, sounded off from the snake.
"So you CAN hear us!!" Harry said while making sure no one heard him.
*I can......and.....you.....children.....have....quite....a....bond* the snake spoke. * The bond......of two.........very.........special......* The snake stopped speaking when someone came from behind the kids.
"Rose, there you are! I've been looking for you!" Remus exclaimed.
"Oh sorry, Uncle. I've been talking to this nice boy. Um... this is Har-" Rose replied.
Remus had his eyes on Harry before Rose could finish leaving the children with a confused look. Remus was lost for words and just stood there before speaking.
"H-how can it be?..." he mumbled. "Ahem-um, sorry young man but Rose and I better be going now. I am sorry to interrupt but... we have some things to do."
"Oh, alright. That's okay. Well, it was nice meeting you Rose." Harry smiled politely.
"And it was nice meeting you too Harry."
Harry watched her walk off with her Uncle Remus before continuing to talk to the snake, causing it to escape the zoo and for Uncle Vernon to give him no meals for a week.
But one thing was certain.
Harry and Rose definitely wouldn't forget that day or the moment they met each other.
And little did they know, that was just the start of a new beginning for both of them.
