Their Chapter:

*Flashback (8th Grade)*

It was the start of a new year. We all stood there at the assembly. It was mostly the same thing every year. Mike and I didn't have many subjects together. We both only had History and P.E. together. Walking to class, I couldn't help but notice a girl my age getting trampled by the stampede of students, so I decided to help her out.

"Here, let me help you," I said, pulling her up.

"Thanks," she said gratefully.

"Are you new here?" I asked

"Yes," The girl mumbled.

"Let me help you. Can I see your schedule?" I asked

"Okay," She said, handing over her schedule.

"We have the same classes except for P.E." I responded, looking up

 "Okay," The girl answered.

"What's your name," I blurted out

"Erica," she answered, giving me a small smile.

"Mine's Ben," I replied

Although it was a small smile, it meant a lot. Every time I smiled at other girls, they would all cringe in disgust. Erica was the first girl that smiled at me.

When I started middle school, I promised myself not to have a crush on any girl because I had no chance of getting any of them. It was too late for that now.

Time Skip (couple months later)

I learned a couple of things about Erica. One, Erica didn't like talking too much. Two, She likes sitting by herself at lunch. I had always felt bad, she only had one or two friends, but I already knew they were only using her. I have tried talking to her, but I was never a conversion starter so, every time I tried, let's say it didn't go too well.

It wasn't until she was struggling with classwork that I had found a way to talk to her. Erica's desk was always next to mine in every class we had together. It was because all the students liked to sit in the back so, Erica and I were the only ones in the front. We were in Algebra and our teacher, Mrs. Bridgford, gave us a quadratic equation worksheet. This worksheet is due by the end of class. There will not be any talking or any groups. You will be independently working on this.

"Once you finish, turn it into me." Mrs. Bridgford instructed.

It was a long worksheet with 100 problems, but I could finish it in less than 5 minutes. I couldn't help but notice Erica struggling with it. Once I had finished it, I turned it in.

"Mrs. Bridgford," I whispered.

"Yes, Benjamin," Mrs. Bridgford answered, looking up from her computer.

"Since I finished, can I help Erica? She looks like she's struggling with it." I asked politely.

"Of course, but keep your voices down," Mrs. Bridgford replied

"Thank you," I answered with a smile.

I headed back to my desk and pushed my desk towards her.

"I think you need help with that," I whispered, sitting down.

"I do," she answered back.

Soon enough, every teacher knew that Erica would get good grades if I helped her with it. For every project we had, we got paired together. Honestly, I had to admit Mike didn't know about my crush on Erica. He probably just thought that she was struggling in school.

(*End of 8th Grade Flashback *)

Ever since middle school, I was a nerd. That kid that was bullied and harassed every day, that was me. Mike was an attractive athlete. He was the kid that girls would flirt with 24/7. He always got the girl. If I even tried, I was made fun of for trying. It was until I got in my final year of middle school that I found the courage to try again. When Mike found interest in Erica, I gave up. Mike always got the girls. Why wouldn't he this time? All the work I put in cracking her icy interior, but all Mike had to do was build up the courage to talk to Erica. But I was the one who had a crush on Erica first. I realized from this moment on that I was getting jealous of Mike. Erica would only talk to me if she needed help. I was just horrible at talking to girls. If it had nothing to do about school, I would start stuttering. I just wished that she might notice me in High School, but why would she. She has her eye on Mike now anyway, I might as well give up. But that all changed just with an earthquake.

Erica told me she likes me. Our school got destroyed. I'm attending Eastwood High, and Erica is going to Great Oaks. All we have to do is convince Erica's dad that Eastwood isn't that bad of a school, or we could always try to make a man-made earthquake to hit Great Oaks. Everything was great except for the fact Erica wasn't going to the same high school, but other than that, everything was good. Erica was my girlfriend, and Mike and Zoe are a thing. I guess all the things I did in 8th grade did pay off for once.
