I KNEW YOU

(Inspired by the song, Cardigan by Taylor Swift)

Conversations over a vintage tea

Brand new phone and nights with me

Clicking high heels on cobblestones

Back when I had you all alone

You saw my sequined smile

With my black lipstick style

Talking about sensual politics

And your smooth antics

When you are young and all-knowing

They all assume you know nothing

But then just by looking at you

I can still say that I knew you

You were dancing on your Levi's

And every time you meet my eyes -

I can still see every special night

Of stolen kisses under the streetlight

Your hands under my sweatshirt

Baby, you were a total flirt

But still you kiss me better

Wished we could stay like this forever

It was like a fool-proof plan

Even when I felt like an old cardigan -

Just lying under someone's bed

You say I'm still your favorite shade of red

I knew you were a friend to all

Yet a friend to none that I can call

Chase girls in two you've gone

And I knew you'd lose the one

So when they thought I knew nothing

My youth and looks can be deceiving

For when I felt like I was an old cardigan

You were there saying I'd be your favorite plan

I knew you playing hide and seek

Giving me the ends of your week

Your heartbeat on the highline

Once in twenty lifetimes, you were mine

Memories of us kissing on cars

In those downtown bars

I always knew it was all I needed

But you had my heart broken instead

You drew all the midnight stars

All around my bleeding scars

I knew you'd step on the last train

Leaving a mark on me like a bloodstain

I knew you'd try to change the ending -

What Peter has ended up losing

I knew you were leaving like a father

And end up running like water

Lingering smoke of a tattooed kiss

I knew you'd always have me to miss

I knew I'd curse you for the longest time

Just like what I had on your perfect crime

Once all the thrill expires

Alone sitting by the fires

I knew you'd come back to me

Where your heart truly wanted to be

When they thought I knew nothing

Deep down, I knew everything

I knew once it got me stung

Knowing everything when I was young

Every time I feel like an old cardigan

I remember how it all began

As if lying under someone's bed

I knew I'd still be your favorite shade of red

I knew I'd still be your favorite shade of red
